About Me

I live near Grand Rapids MI. I have enjoyed movies all my life but have been re-educating myself over the past few years primarily through building my library of Criterion Collection DVDs. I enjoy watching films a couple of times or more to get a better sense of how and why they were made and how they went on to affect viewers, shape our culture and contribute to the larger story of world cinema.

I have a film blog dedicated to recording my thoughts about Criterion Collection films: http://criterionreflections.blogspot.com

I also write a weekly column on the Eclipse Series for CriterionCast.com

Z. Bart, in addition to being a completist, I'm also watching all my Criterion DVDs in chronological order (of the original film's release.) I know, I know... not normal. But anyway, of those I've seen, The Children are Watching and Les Dames du Bois de Boulogne seem kind of mediocre, Terminal Station is kind of disposable, but I still found things to like about 'em. From what I recall, Jubilee is kind of a mess but I still like the British punk rock 1977 vibe. Maybe when I get to some of the newer titles in my trek I'll find stuff that I'd otherwise reject outright. Generally speaking, I'm pretty impressed by Criterion's judgement of what to release when they're given the opportunity. I'll never dispute Armageddon's or The Rock's place in the collection, I figure the money those DVDs made allowed Criterion to release more obscure stuff or even just stay in business!

Preston Sturges shows a fair amount of nerve here, and cinematic audacity is, I’m convinced, one of the primary criteria that makes a film Criterion-worthy. By naming the film as he did, he draws comparisons…  read review
