Hey all, stumbled here from the new Criterion site. Liking what I’m seeing so far. It’s difficult to find people in real life that want to talk about or watch foreign films or read those “pesky subtitles” in “those strange foreign films” so a place like The Auteurs is welcome.
Bobby: I’d like an omelet, plain, and a chicken salad sandwich on wheat toast, no mayonnaise, no butter, no lettuce. And a cup of coffee.
Waitress: A #2, chicken salad sand. Hold the butter, the lettuce, the mayonnaise, and a cup of coffee. Anything else?
Bobby: Yeah, now all you have to do is hold the chicken, bring me the toast, give me a check for the chicken salad sandwich, and you haven’t broken any rules.
Waitress: You want me to hold the chicken, huh?
Bobby: I want you to hold it between your knees.
Just bought Pandora’s Box and I must say I am impressed with the film, although I’m not sure I loved the film. The supplements disc also seems to be very well put together, as usual.
One curiosity about the original audio soundtrack, I am wondering if the original soundtrack was recorded separately from the film. From what I’ve read, the original soundtrack has been lost. I am interested to learn more about this lost original soundtrack. I listened to the Cabaret-style score on the dvd, It seemed to suit the mood the best.
I’ve had good luck with Criterion blind buys so far, Peeping Tom,The Third Man(original release) and Pandora’s Box.
Have you had good or bad luck with those financially “risky” Criterion blind buys?
I dug Hiroshima Mon Amour. I think I rented it. Probably wouldn’t purchase that one though unless it was for a good price.
Oh, I forgot to mention that I found Kagemusha in a video game store for $3 a few years back. It doesn’t have the booklet, but I was dumbfounded. I don’t think the game store realized what they had.

I was able to watch about 15 minutes of Diary of a Chambermaid, found it a snooze-fest.

Actually, I think Pandora’s Box is a creeper. I may not really like it until after a second viewing.
