“Time is said to be irreversible. And this is true enough in the sense that ‘you can’t bring back the past’. But what exactly is this ‘past’? Is it what has passed? And what does ‘passed’ mean for a person when for each of us the past is the bearer of all that is constant in the reality of the present, of each current moment? In a certain sense the past is far more real, or at any rate more stable, more resilient than the present. The present slips and vanishes like sand between the fingers, acquiring material weight only in its recollection. King Solomon’s ring bore the inscription, ‘All will pass’; by contrast, I want to draw attention to how time in its moral implication is in fact turned back. Time can vanish without trace in our material world for it is a subjective, spiritual category. The time we have lived settles in our soul as an experience placed within time.” — Andrei Tarkovsky

“Time destroys all things.” — The Butcher, Irréversible

The Last Stand

It's a film that couldn't help but be at odds with itself, and I kind of wanted to give it the benefit of the doubt by thinking of it as the Last Action Hero vs. the Modern Action Bullshit. It almost succeeds in that way, but it falters too often to be really convincing. If you're around 30 years old or so and have grown up watching Arnold's films, for better or worse, you'll probably get something out of this.

Meant to respond to this sooner! The holidays have kept me quite busy. Anyway, I'm glad to support — it's nice that we seem to agree on a lot of things, but I especially appreciate your ability to articulate opinions on this site.

So I should watch Universal Soldier: Day of Reckoning or something?

Yes! But have you seen the first Universal Soldier? It's a really silly post-Terminator piece of '90s action, mixing slapstick into Vietnam vet pathos. Something about it has always worked for me, ridiculous as it is. Maybe just that it's ridiculous. You should also see Regeneration, which takes this idea of reanimated super soldiers and injects it into something far more... well, serious. It's kind of like John Carpenter + MMA + Blade Runner/Robocop/etc. Frankenstein growing old. Reckoning resets the idea yet again, and this time along with the Carpenter there's a huge Noé influence and a bit of a Lost Highway feel. One of the few films I've seen instill a long-take kung fu fighting sequence with the dread of a Noé film.

And by "Frankenstein" I meant to liken Van Damme and Lundgren to Frankenstein's monster, of course, wherein the actual Frankenstein is the real monster.

I can't send you a message? :( sorry mate didn't mean to offend you. I still like your taste and all, just wanted to see my personal friends' feed before other people whom I do not know... that's the only bias there is.
