Eclipse over 3 years ago

I know it wouldn’t really be a great thing to do until more directors’ works have been put out through Eclipse doing repeats, but I would really like to see more Kaurismäki box sets like the one already released. It seems to pretty much be an import of the Artificial Eye collection, and if they could get the rest of those it would be awesome. Although I already own the Leningrad Cowboys box, so if they were to do that I’d want those films remastered, so not really Eclipse. :P

I still haven’t gotten a chance to watch the Kaurismäki set unfortunately; bit too busy with school. I have gotten to watch Klein’s Mr. Freedom, which I thought was a great pop art film. I would love to see more pop stuff like this put out by Criterion.

Hm, guess my phrasing was bad, I do own the Kaurismäki set, I just haven’t gotten to finish it yet. My priority was finishing the Leningrad Cowboys set I have, which I finally did this past weekend. I’m just hoping Criterion gets the rights to more of his films.

Also, it sounds like the Shepitko set is worth picking up at some point from this, so I might get that at some point soon, especially since it’s so inexpensive.

Movies That Should Be In the Criterion Collection over 3 years ago

I’m kinda surprised no one has mentioned In the Realm of the Senses. That’s an oop film that I would love to see get a proper release.

A History Of Violence over 3 years ago

Even if the film isn’t groundbreaking or innovative in the context of all of cinema’s history (but we’d never really have anything develop if everything was that way, either), but this film I think really needs to be looked at as groundbreaking and innovative in terms of Cronenberg. Granted I haven’t seen all of Spider, but this film seemed to me to bring together the intensity of his more visceral works with the more upfront humanity in his works such as Spider.

Best Picture Oscar Nominees for 2008 over 3 years ago

Ya know, at the end of the day I can’t really decide what will get a best picture nom this year. It’s just been too weird, in that nothing’s really been too outstanding other than The Dark Knight, which is not the kind of film the Academy would go for. So my hands are in the air on this one.

If memory serves me correctly, I read somewhere a long time ago that the cinematography in the film is meant to be extremely dark. Like I said, it’s been a very long time since I read that, so I doubt I’d be able to find again where I read it.

I would really appreciate them putting out more Chinese films. The Last Emperor doesn’t really count as a Chinese film to me, and they’ve only put out four Hong Kong films (between but two directors; as great as they, more would be appreciated in that manner as well) and one Taiwanese film.

On an odder note, I wouldn’t mind some North Korean films being released. Even Pulgasari hasn’t made it to DVD, and it’s the only easy one to track down Stateside. Not that most of the films from out of there are worth watching, even if some are decent.

I’d say watch it on a screen that you can adjust settings on pretty precisely so that you can make the film look as good as it can to you. I happened to watch it on a TV that was calibrated in such a way that I could still see enough in the darker scenes to understand what was going on, and it definitely created an interesting atmosphere.

Film-makers who lose it: which are the films that told you they've lost their grip? about 3 years ago

Since film is inherently about the visuals and those are what everything must focus around in a film, I find no fault in producing a form where the visual aesthetics are the content. Otherwise I’d probably hate a good number of short films I’ve seen that have just been visually awesome.
