Who else dislikes Nicolas Cage? over 3 years ago

I’d have to put Nicholas Cage in the “like” category, however he has become the whore of Hollywood lately, in my opinion. It seems like he does 20 movies a year and none of which are any good. Its money over quality these days.

One of the Scariest Movies I Know! over 3 years ago

I remember how much trouble I had sleeping after seeing this film. I can’t put what I felt into words which only means one thing… I need to see it again and lose another nights sleep. Well Worth It.

How about…

Maria Falconetti in La Passion de Jeanne d’Arc

Her last role in only three films she did. Can’t blame her for never doing another after the hell that Dreyer put her through, but boy did it ever pay off.

David Lynch Overrated? over 3 years ago

I remember going to the 20th Anniversary showing of Blue Velvet and Lynch was there before the show to be interviewed. He mentioned Inland Empire, shooting on digital for the first time, declined to give any insight into any of his films multiple times and spoke about his inspirations. Mainly Jacques Tati which he said he grew up on. I have yet to get into Tati’s Films even though they are sitting on my shelf but I will be sure to look out for any material that inspired Lynch.

Hey Chris, I remember finally figuring out Mulholland Dr. after a weekend of watching it over and over and it felt like I had conquered the world. Even though there is much I still don’t understand it was an amazing film and a great experience.

Criterion Blu(e)s over 3 years ago

Regarding the capacity…

The reason that shouldn’t be done is because the capacity is used up by the quality (High bit rate video, Loseless audio) if you cram 2, 3 or 4 films on a double layer 50Gb blu-ray each film will look like a regular DVD. This is why when Lawrence of Arabia is released by Sony it will be spread across two discs just like the better DVD releases of the film to keep up the quality of a long film.

However, once the 100 GB and 200 GB discs which have been developed get through testing and everything else I as well think that it should be used to put box sets on a single disc. The reason they won’t use all 200Gb of room to make the quality even better is because after around 50Gb there isn’t much room for improvement because Blu-ray is capped at close to 48 mbps including audio.

Even though you have a great idea it would be pointless if you spent 3 times the price of a DVD, 4 times the cost of a player, and thousands for a HDTV to get DVD quality films.

What was the first Criterion movie you watched? over 3 years ago

My first was Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. I remember that it was the cover that drew me in and I automatically purchased it. My second was Man Bites Dog which scared the crap out of me the first time (I was young) but the next day when I re-watched it I simply laughed my ass off.

Movies people seem to love for all the wrong reasons. over 3 years ago

Hate people who think Fight Club is a great movie because it has underground fighting. They miss the entire point of the film.

What films do you always catch shit for for not liking? over 3 years ago

Foreign Directors Entering Hollywood about 3 years ago

Hollywood is a cancer for creativity. Very difficult for a director who is used to the artistic appreciation of Europe to come over into a land were money is the only measurement of success.

And stop saying America makes great films in general due to its success in the 70’s and before. America is making trash 95% of the time and the past is no excuse for such horrible output today. We can’t keep bringing up past achievements as proof of a successful art form while we are in the process of producing more and more unacceptable films.

Foreign Directors Entering Hollywood about 3 years ago

It is very true that we only get a sample of the films from these countries and that it would be wrong to judge their entire output with only these films. But I have lived in Germany and France and from experience I can tell you that America doesn’t even come close. You could ask an average person in Germany and they know who Fassbinder and Herzog are. But good luck getting that far when asking an ordinary citizen of the US who John Cassavetes and Stanley Kubrick are. That alone was enough to solidify in my mind the gap between Americans and Europeans. Unfortunately, all these countries we speak of are heavily saturated with Hollywood films and Hollywood studios nowadays.

For god’s sake, the Academy Awards is the benchmark for cinema in this country!

I truly hope you aren’t defending Hollywood in your post because I would feel foolish after recognizing your post with a reply.

Fuck it, at least we have There Will Be Blood.

Finding 70mm Screenings about 1 year ago

What’s the best way to find screenings of 70mm films near me. I know ArcLight Hollywood shows some every once in a while, but there’s got to be a way to find more scheduled screenings around my location. Google is just a mess.

On the seasonality of films (even when it isn't that relevant) 9 months ago

This happens to me often. For instance, I’m attracted to Bergman’s films more during the winter months, especially December. Funny enough I live in LA so Christmas Day looks and feels like early April, yet I wouldn’t watch them if it was early April.

Just think of it this way, If you we’re watching Se7en, wouldn’t it hit the spot more if it was raining heavily outside and it was night. Kinda like matching the atmosphere of the film.
