About Me

I was born and raised in Fullerton, California — left handed and an only child. I moved to San Francisco in 1991, where I finished my B.A. and M.A. degrees at SFSU. I moved to L.A. in 1997 for a doctoral program at USC — which I left in 1999 to pursue a full-time position at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ Margaret Herrick Library.

My first love, since I was a kid — was for horror films — and, I definitely have held on to a fascination for things that scare or unnerve me. I also have a great love for Japanese films and culture. My all-time favorite filmmaker is Yasujiro Ozu.

My partner Paul and I live in Van Nuys with our cats, Buster and Hazel.

Let-me-in

Let Me In

Let Me In is a respectable remake of Let the Right One In, though it lacks the original's poetry, ambiguous sexuality, and (unintentionally hilarious) cats. Matt Reeves adds some nice moments, chief among them a thrillingly memorable car crash, and Michael Giacchino's excellent score. Chloe Moretz is good but lacks the androgynous, haunting qualities that Lina Leandersson brought to the original.

I enjoyed looking through your lists, and trust you have a pretty extensive range of knowledge on the subject of film. You have a new follower. P.S. I saw you mention you were a fan of A Room With a View. I've been very interested in seeing it for a while now. I just got NetFlix and am planning on watching it tonight.

Steve -- I enjoyed the film quite a bit. I didn't love it, though -- I wanted to, though! Look: for you, I added an extra star for Ida (and for Jozef Króner, who is great, too). Frankly, though -- of the Czech films from that period -- it's CLOSELY WATCHED TRAINS that I love, love, love....
