Naryna Jesse, You wrote in your post in the theme FAVORITE SILENT FILMS/DIRECTORS that you were trying to remember Ukrainian director "ostensibly making silent films.... black-and-white films, one is about swans." It can be the late responce, but... I'm from Ukraine and I have only one suggestion that it could be Felix Sobolev who actually did documentaries, and he filmed such movies as Language of Animals, 1967, Can Animals Think, 1970 etc.
That's a nice review of Irreversible. That film hit me hard, but I found myself going back to watch it the next day. I just couldn't believe a film had done that to me. Extraordinary. That's what I love so much about film--there's a visceral immediacy to its affect on you that no other art form can really touch. They say that the physiology of the brain while watching a movie is very similar to what happens when we dream. Makes so much sense. Anyway, this is my roundabout way of asking whether you've seen Martyrs. I had a very similar reaction to it as I did to Noe's film.
