About Me

“It’s far easier to write why something is terrible than why it’s good. If you’re reviewing a film and you decide “This is a movie I don’t like,” basically you can take every element of the film and find the obvious flaw, or argue that it seems ridiculous, or like a parody of itself, or that it’s not as good as something similar that was done in a previous film. What’s hard to do is describe why you like something. Because ultimately, the reason things move people is very amorphous. You can be cerebral about things you hate, but most of the things you like tend to be very emotive.” -Chuck Klosterman

The Housemaid

Indeed a great discovery. Let film fans rejoice that there are those individuals out there who care enough to put such effort into restoring and preserving such under-appreciated classics.

Hi, i'm not sure if you're the same broomstickplease who posted on this (http://www.theauteurs.com/topics/4383) forum 8 months ago but I just wanted to say I agree with what you said. I've always seen the Pinky Violence and Foxy Brown the way you have "Of the handful I’ve seen... the main aspect is the incredibly strong female characters, who are not victims but rather heroines. They are aware of their sexuality, and the film features it, but never exploits it. While nudity is prominent, the films never become pornographic in an American sense. It’s refreshing to see female characters akin to those portrayed by Pam Grier during the blaxploitation era of film." I just got into them recently and so far, while there is a bit of misogyny typical of the time, I've always felt the females really came off as in control heroines, not victims, whether the director intended that or not.
