About Me

I am a film critic and fully dedicated film buff, currently with no affiliation to any publication, but I spend my time writing small to mini reviews of everything I watch. Currently I post my small thoughts on Facebook and MUBI, but my back catalog is located on my website, www.dunkirkma.net, as well as MySpace and Rotten Tomatoes. -— Adam Suraf

Smart Money

Edward G. Robinson has one of his best early roles as Nick the Barber, a small town gambler who makes it big in the city, but a soft spot for blondes clouds his better judgement. James Cagney is around as Robinson's brother and prevailing right hand man, the only time the Warner Brother's stars ever appeared together. A great gambling movie, with some terrific Robinson one-liners.

'Smart Money' seems interesting. I love Green's 1933 'Baby Face'.

It's solid, it's pretty much a Robinson feature, as "Little Caeser" was out already, and he was a star, and "Public Enemy" wasn't, so Cagney is only a supporting player, but they work well together in their few on screen scenes. I don't know much about Green, the film doesn't strike me as a film with many directorial flourishes, but still, you should check it out, especially if you have an interest in Warner Brothers in the early 30's.

Hi, Did the subtitles for 'Souls on the Road' match the video file? Glad you liked the film. // If 'Doña Bárbara' is available on YT as a single upload, you could download the file and then play it with subs on a media player. Let me know if that's an option. If not, you could still combine the parts but that's more work. No, I don't believe that's how I watched this film. // What do you need for 'Two Stage Sisters'? // Arsaib

I found Dona Barbara finally, but Two Stage Sisters is pretty hard, I'd need video and subs. The subs for Souls were in sync but flash very quick, sometimes too quick to read in full.

Yes, the subs on Dona Barbara that I found were badly timed, but I got through it okay. Thanks for Two Stage Sisters, I'll let you know what I think, but you may have to find me the subs if I can't find them online.

My ten-month long Hitchcock retrospective has ended. This followed complete studies of Lang, Ford, Melville, Lloyd, Keaton, and Kurosawa. Who next? I have the complete Pasolini in my collection, so that's a possibility, but hardly as fun as Hitchcock.
