Two pop in to my mind, Children of Men and Solaris. Just watching Children of Men was an extremely emotional watch. The music choice was fantastic, the cinematography was to die for and the actors really pulled off the acting.Solaris is perfect in the way that it presents its ideas. Its a really stunning mindbender.
Traumatic: Gus Van Sant’s Elephant – you know happens, but the fact that they don’t show you leaves your mindto wander to the darker possiblities, if there are any.
Dramatic: Tarkovsky’s Solaris – Really makes you think.
only pretentious ___holes. Really I loved it, It was exactly what I expected to see and more. The score was fantastic, I was really surprised by the look Wally Pfister gave the film with his stunning cityscape shots. Sorry, if I offended anyone with my first statement, but really some people just annoy the doo doo out of me.
I Loved Little Miss Sunshine, It’s in my top ten favorites. The one movie I can’t stand that everyone else likes is Dances with Wolves. Its boring, too straightforward and I cannot stand kevin costner as an actor.
I’m switching the topic around from a different board, but the question begs to be asked. What Movie DoYou Like That Everyone Else Hates?
For me its Suspiria Directed By Dario Argento all my friends hate it, but I totally love it. The candy colors, brutal murders and, campy dialouge(sp) really call to me.
I personally think the horror genre is dead or dying, therefore I never really see a movie that really scared and or disturbed me. One that never fails to scare or give me the chills is The Exorcist. and one that has disturbed me to the point of losing sleep is Irreversible. Other than those I can’t really think of any others. Any suggestions?
Ingmar Bergman’s Shame: When Max Von Sydow and Liv Ullman are walking through the trees as the camera moves along with them from the side.
Andrie Tarkovsky’s Ivans Chilhood: in the begining when flares fall through a forest swamp and the light filters through the trees. anything directed by tarkovsky is beautifully shot.
Favorites: Max Von Sydow, Liv Ullman, Amy Adams(she is so darn cute and lovable), Ian McKellan.
Worst: Adam Sandler, Pauly Shore, Gwenyth Paltrow (shes not that bad, but she has no variety in her preformances), Steve Segal.
Suspiria: Dario Argento
The Bird with the Crystal Plummage: Dario Argento
The Grey Zone: Tim Blake Nelson
Stalker: Andrei Tarkovsky
All About My Mother: Pedro Almodovar
Persona: Ingmar Bergman
The Sacrifice: Andrei Tarkovsky
Children of Men: Alfonso Cuaron
Three Colors Trilogy and Decalouge: Kryztof Kieslowski
Oh, I can’t wait for Giallo. I think Argento is better in the mystery department than he is in the horror. Supiria is great don’t get me wrong, but he is best at thrillers. Deep Red, Tenebre, and The Bird With the Crystal Plummage masterpieces. My friends can’t stand his movies, does anyone think he is an aquired taste?

What image (not shot) from a movie sticks out most in your mind? A single frame of a movie, Think about it and tell me what you think. I’m aspiring to become a cinematographer and I want to know what goes through the minds of the audience when they see an image that emotionally affects them.
So tell me the movie, the image and why it affected you? If its too personal you don’t have to share.
Children of Men, the scene in which the bus of fugees is brought into bexhill. it is beautifully shot and haunting. the one shot of the bus when it drives through the gate of the refugee camp, Gorgeous.
Suspiria By Dario Argento. The Idea of a horror films from the seventies seems to turn a lot of people off. I loved the candy colors and the whole look of a Hans Christian Anderson fairy tale on shrooms.
Cinema is not dying per say, but there are certain genres that are expierencing crippling lows. I feel that horror and science fiction are taking huge blows these days.
Mezmorized: I totally agree with your last comment.
Favorites: Suspiria, The Shining, The Exorcist, Blood and Black Lace. I find none of these movies scary, but there is so much more to them than just to shock. At least I think so.
Scariest: The Ring (lost two nights of sleep over it), Signs(checked my room every night just to make sure no aliens were blending in with the wall) and The Mothman Prophecies (can’t look out the windows at night. I don’t want to see huge red eyes looking back at me)
Sven Nykvist – Very Simplistic and beautiful.
Vittorio Storaro – Gives the movies a fantastic look of scope
Emmanuel Lubezki – Children of Men, thats why!
Wes Anderson is, I find, one of the most overrated directors.he has been making the same movie since The Royal Tenebaums. Granted I did like Rushmore I just find his movies pretentious and self indulgent.
No, I find his movies pretentious and self indulgent. He has been making the same movie since The Royal Tenenbaums. I liked Rushmore, but other than that the rest are just…annoying.
I’ve been trying to suggest some Argento. His first trilogy would be good. The Bird with the Crystal Plummage, The Cat o’ Nine Tails, and Four Flies on Gray Velvet
I find Pedro Almodovar’s films to be very erotic. The subject matter itself maybe not, but the camera movements are very sensual, non of that hand held bullshit. The colors, the dialouge, and even the movement of the people seems to lend its self to the sensuality of the films.
I was just wondering….Has anybody watched a movie that made you feel a strong emotion. I’m not talking about any deep brooding thrillers that made you feel depressed and sad, but rather a comedy that has made you sad or a drama that made you laugh (in a good way). Or is it just me. No anwser is a stupid one.
I don’t know. Its hard for me to explain, but I do know when I’m seeing something great. It’s just something inside you that tells you your watching something special.
