Bicycle Thieves

A beautiful and touching film about a simple man trying to provide for his family. This story is masterfully told and shot beautifully without elaborate embellishment. A really impressive picture, not undeserving of the word "masterpiece"

The Piano Teacher

Although I was initially disgusted by this film and felt it was needlessly gratuitous, as more time passes the more I am convinced of it's worth. The representation of this woman's sexual repression and her frustrations with reality are dealt with in a much more delicate way that I had initially thought. Haneke is a master at an impartial presentation of truly horrifying events

Avatar

Subtlety is certainly not the key in this heavy-handed and overbearing fantasy flick. With it's Vegas-like phosphoresce and blunt dialogue, Avatar offered the unique experience of too much to take in yet not enough to think about. This is definitely an over-rated picture with little to offer beyond its contributions to the continuing menace of flashy special effects.

The Descent

I was wriggling in claustrophobic discomfort almost from the get-go and only when I could take no more did the film become truly terrifying

The Descent

I have no idea how Errol Morris finds his fascinating subjects

Collapse

Although I suspect a lot of this is exaggerated by paranoia and obsession, one can't argue with the math. The human race has let something very scary happen and now we can't do much else but wait. I'm not cut out for living off the land.

Like the opposite of a fairy tale, Precious seems to suggests that the rewards are small and sparing, even to those of us who work hardest and deserve it most. I can't think of any film that so relentlessly crushed me.

The atmosphere of fantasy and childhood innocence has not left me and I wish I could see this film again
