Screenings in theaters are nice but having someone answer their phone in the middle of Open City is not. I was not surprised when some young upstart answered her phone during Harry Potter (wisdom teeth extraction= drugs= I didn’t kick her in the fucking head) but, when decent films are molested by audience members, it’s almost not worth it. Having a bad memory (because of a bad environment) of a film is like being haunted by Ronald Reagan’s ghost
In your opinion, who is missing/who should be missing? etc
I know, I know: it’s a list but I wanted to start a discussion anew because “Stop the Lists!” must be wadded through and one cannot respond, directly, to comments
I understand when filmmakers mention directors and films they appreciate but talking shit about other directors is ridiculous. While a director might not like another’s style but, personally, I think ragging on another is in poor taste and shows a lack of appreciation/tolerance for diversity.
KENJI— thanks for posting the article on Bergman— being a Nazi sympathizer.
While I find support for him ridiculous, I appreciate that Bergman was honest about his previous support; admitting that it’s easy to be influenced under the right circumstances. I suppose, the only thing worse than being a Nazi sympathizer is later denying it. Then again, it’s smarter to admit to something (lest being proven a liar) then say you’ve changed.
In the world of [finance&filmmaking] shit talking will get more press but less respect. By that, I mean to say that having less funding shouldn’t be an acceptable reason (more like excuse) to publicly dismiss another filmmakers work. Using public gossip to get attention has nothing to do with making a film.
Forget directors—> Open City needs to be inducted ASAP
That being said, I feel like THE CRITERION COLLECTION has become lax with some of their choices, almost as if adding new titles is about making money not making a solid list. Maybe I’m just being picky or maybe movie quality has gone down.
I haven’t seen enough to rank a list but I hope the Oscars don’t turn out like the AAs. I was annoyed that Sandra Bullock beat Gabourey Sidibe- the award decision failed to recognize that Sandra has been acting for years while Gabourey came out of the woodwork and gave a performance like that
after reading you quote, I realized that, based on this list, it’s less about best living directors and more about best living directors who are current thus relevant (i.e. making films within the last few years)
I remember seeing the Green Mile, in the theater, when I was around 6. I remember sobbing when the guard told the the man who was about to be electrocuted that there was no mouse circus. My mother pinched my arm and told to to stop crying

Luckily for me, John Cassavetes is no longer living, lest he be considered for the list.

What is the one movie, if any in particular, that sparked your interest in film? about 2 years ago
Ummmmm, I want to say Amelie (in 8th grade) started me on foreign films
Although, when I was 6 or 7, I watched Forrest Gump every Sunday morning because we didn’t have cable and I was tired of Disney movies

Bobby,
I watched Chinese Bookie then A Woman, had it been the other way ’roud, his work might have had a better chance of permeating my cassavaphobic brain.
What should I watch (that might redeem him)?
