A hypnotic broken masterpiece that uses found footage in a transcendent way- to view the birth of a new society. The 'Tree of Life' of Sci-Fi films.
Sun Don't Shine is a fierce and mysterious debut film from the talented Actress Amy Seimetz (A Horrible Way to Die) that could teach many horror films a thing or two about creating dread, emotion and encroaching tension. A throwback to films like 'Badlands' & 'Two Lane Blacktop' with a pinch of 'Repulsion'. Unmissable filmmaking that felt both emotionally true and elusive at the same time. My fav film at SXSW.
All three stars are for Olsen and the camerawork. The story and dialogue are very poor and obvious. Almost worth seeing for the technical accomplishment alone, but not quite.
The final film by one of the most important film artists of the century has shades of 'Jeanne Dielman' and 'Au Hasard Balthazar' while never straying from the directors singular vision of the world - at times grueling and others hypnotic it feels like the perfect concluding chapter to his career. The opening shot may be amongst the finest I have ever seen. His absence from the future of cinema will be sorely missed.
I kept thinking of 'High Noon' all through watching this. Isabelle as Sheriff Will Kane? Who would have thought.
I was a big fan of De Van's short films and her first feature, so I had high hopes. Intriguing cast, a bigger budget and identity/body horror. How could things go wrong? Almost every note of this film is off. The tone, performances, score, and style of the film are so overwrought as to make it nearly unwatchable.
My fav of the year- so full of life, beauty and insight. Binoche at her absolute best.
All three stars are for the opening scene which is great- it's all down form there...
One of the most original and visually striking uses of the short film format I have ever seen. Inner life made visible.
A great NZ Film!
One of the truly great NZ films.
Incredibly focused film-making. It's a shame it is so hard to track down because these shorter features of Clarke's are amongst his best work. Someday he will get the real recognition he deserves.
I have wanted to see this for years. Anyone know where I could find it?
Just saw 'The hand in the trap', incredible filmmaking. A revelation, wish they were easier to find.
Just found it on Amazon on demand for $10.
The transitions are more interesting then the film itself.
The film it is made from is equally creepy 'The Entity'. Really got under my skin.
R.I.P Merata Mita who was a true NZ pioneer and a real loss to the film industry. Patu is amongst the most important and political works ever made in New Zealand. She will be missed.
Just read the book, it is fantastic. But if you want to see Savannah watch the film and close your eyes to the drama.
Wildly free, theatrical madness. At times baffling and others sublime. Like nothing else.
Sadly not her debut- as that would be the turkey Boxing Helena. But this does show promise.
Remarkable contrast between the innocence and wonder of childhood and the empty reality of adulthood.
" I bring you a message. Exactly six miles north of Skagg Mountain in the Valley of Pain, there lives an evil devil-monster. His name is Bingo Gas Station Motel Cheeseburger With A Side Of Aircraft Noise And You'll Be Gary Indiana. And he *loves* to hurt people. The last time I saw Bingo Gas Station Motel Cheeseburger With A Side Of Aircraft Noise And You'll Be Gary Indiana, he told me what he wants to do. He wants to come down here and kill each and every one of you! But I said to him: "Bingo, wait a minute." And the reason I said that is because I believe in you people. I believe you can do the job. I believe you can help each other. I believe you can make this world a better place to live in. That's it. " - Jessy, Greasers Palace My Fav quote ever.
Please read the book first. So much better.
After Suture and The Deep end this is really disappointing. Interesting premise and sound performances undercut by a limp script that has absolutely no teeth. Where did their edge go?
Cool guy, used to rent from Facets. He had impeccable taste.
Schlockmeister Bergman's remake of the classic Wes Craven movie " Last House on the Left".
6 make it a revolution!
Fascinating politics and strong performances but the scope is too much of a burden on the film to ever really explore any of the subjects in real depth.
We demand his films be added!
