‘Caligari’ is a definite classic and great film. I really enjoyed Caligari as a character, throughout and was disappointed that although Francis was telling the story, I felt he was quite secondary, in character portrayal. Lastly, the film was eerie in some parts and gritty exaggerated in others. I understand the popularity it has achieved, since its release.
I won’t give too much away, but let’s just say I felt ‘Infernal’ was the more poetic. I can only think of a handful of shots in Scorcese’s rendition where I felt jolted emotionally or began to question morality of certain characters. I believe Scorcese’s visceral blunt, Irish(?) style contrasted sharply with the calm, “anti-Woo”(words of David Bordwell) sensibilities of Lau and Mak.
Although the film seemed dated, I believe the themes of God’s power in humans’ hands fit nicely and can be related to contemporary moments, for sure.
Oduye & Wayans performed their roles with precision and thoughtful caution. I didn’t feel anything weak, forced( except the first song on the soundtrack). While grabbing at the heart0strings constantly, there were a few points of comical relief. Additionally, supporting characters didn’t undermine but offered acting cushions. ‘Pariah’ was worth the wait.
I watched this for one of my summer courses, here at the Univ. I didn’t expect to like this movie, but the narrative was actually alright. Boris Karloff fit the part of the Creature well and amplified the domineering fear of child-rearing into a spectacle of monstrous enjoyment.
coming of age from an overdramatic male that sees his life as a big old movie. really enjoyable.
I rewatched today and still loved it. Ambiguous endings make for great debate. I personally think that there's a hidden homosexual relationship within the film is shrouded by a Hollywood-forced heterosexual relationship. Just saying
somewhere between the uninterrupted(by talking heads) archival footage and the underdog story, did I begin to truly grasp this story of Ayrton Senna. He was an amazing driver , and a flawed but noteworthy human being. He was an athlete and died doing something he loved. One garners great respect for him, while also being exposed to his life through various lenses. A must-see doc.
First Cocteau film and most certainly won't be my last. Orpheus was fantastical and enjoyable. Took some time to adjust to where it was going but then you just go with the flow and are invested in Orpheus' fate. However, I was more sympathetic to Heurtebise than any other character. Also, the cheesiness works..just saying.
A good to favorable documentary with some poignant and relevant interviews. The images were powerful and stood for something larger....a national problem. The point is to empathize and to actually induce change for those that believe this is just a common (exaggerated) problem. This is a must-watch for today's teenagers also.
Astonishingly witty and terrifying. Relies on a cast of character that make personal decisions for the 'good' of their nationalistic beliefs. The film points out, delineates the tensions, underlying motives and complete absurdity of the Cold War and its time during the sixties. Have to love Buck Turgidson.
plainly awesome.
Stone's screenwriting was on-point and this story that he tells of a gangster was enticing and interesting; there's a desire to see whether he succeeds. But in the end, this film shows that crime pays but not for long, especially when one gets overly cocky(?). Montana played by Pacino: accent was horrid; I prefer his other roles.
Thereon wasn't as convincing as an immature man(woman)-child, but she did well as a depressed character and she had her big moment near the end. Oswalt was might fine as well, and supported well, probably more emotion and humor from him than Thereon. In the end, expected more from the narrative, and believe that Cody works well more with younger protagonists, in my opinion. Side note: film was shot in my home county.
Having only read only 11 chapters(didn't finish it in time when I well could have...oh well...), the film stood alone as a superb piece of work. Of course it wasn't perfect, the hetero-normative factor seemed a little forced and made me wish that Katniss had been a lesbian character for some reason. Anyways, the action and drama was on-point and served the movie very well. A recommended viewing.
Ridiculously outrageous, satirical and over-the-top. does this type of humor work for me? No not necessarily. I liked the quick wordplay and sarcastic attitude of Groucho but his two fools Pinky and Chico didn't resonate. The whole humor wasn't that popular when it came out so I suppose it's this movie a classic for cult status. I'll stick to Keaton & Chaplin for my '30s comedy fix though.
I didn't really care that much for the robotic-like, emotionless protagonist. Additionally, the slow-pacing contributed to this and I just didn't retain interest throughout the film. Only when the pacing accelerated, with adrenaline and music to compliment did I root for Hans and his outcome. Not to say that this film was a waste of time but it just didn't feel like I was supposed to care about this criminal.
An enjoyable superhero movie from Marvel. Great acting from all roles and great cinematography that just fit the fantastical elements so well. Costume design was on point as well. Just a fun time, doesn't take itself too corny or too seriously
a true comedy and drama. It made me laugh deeply in parts, and cry deeply in parts. It was strong all around and had that warmth to it that can only be achieved through the efforts of the four main roles: Plummer, McGregor, Laurent, and "Arthur."
kind of expected a little bit more, but he glamorized Paris the same way he does with New York City so I liked it for that. Owen Wilson wasn't too bad either.
one word. plot holes. cool cinematography though?
A great, emotional, superb way to end one of the greatest movie franchises of all time. Wouldn't have probably succeeded, both movies in that case, without the direction Yates and incredible of casting.
I'm liking this film more for Sergeant Boyle than anything else. Not that the film seemed average yet I'm not sure the cohesion the narrative was always there. I'd say the character of Boyle with his middlebrow, complicated anti-hero traits was the best and most intriguing. He's educated yet you wouldn't know that because he's not bragging about it. His impressions are so mixed. Not sure of ending yet.
it was much better than the marketing told me it was going to be; listened to the good word of mouth about this film and just went with it. I like how the film had some substance to it, I could tell it wasn't trying to dumb the audience down by not explaining the science. Franco was kind of miscast in this also. Serkis was well-cast; the vfx team deserves this Oscar.
the perfect summer blockbuster, for me at least. totes came out on my b-day and didn't see it *facepalm* *thumbs up for redbox though*
a movie that didn't really connect with my sympathies. the protaganist was flawed: selfish, money-hungry, a fake revolutionary. should've watched Che instead. Although, Ramirez gets brownie points for his multilingual capabilities and body modification.
not too many talking heads. relies on visual effects and photographs(both still and moving, all archival in one way), which truly documents the lives of these people. The Eames couple is genuinely interesting in that they are refreshing and new, and proletarian.
Tarantino's first film pointed out a lot of his style that I hadn't noticed before(homoerotic relationships, casual conversation preceding and/or succeeding violence). Additionally, the performance by Keitel was superb. Overall, it was an enjoyable experience, and I can see where it comes from and where it eventually goes.
Liked it way more than I expected. Illustrates Cameron's abilities when it comes to the genres of action and genre. Loved that the comedic elements weren't exaggerated( jab @ G.I. Joe: Rise of the Cobra), yet just enough to ease the tension. Well-done acting by Biehn, Hamilton had her moment near the end though.
A film that depicts the highs and lows of families. There’ s a great ensemble of characters both young and old; a well-rounded feel for what truly is an extended family. Additionally, with this ensemble of characters, drama and comedy both shine with equal and effective share. There’s a nice balance.
