As far as the whole “romantic comedy thing” goes, you really can’t go wrong with “When Harry Met Sally”. It’s pretty much the perfect example of what that genre should aspire to. Now we have shit like “The Notebook” and “The Ugly Truth” coming out of the studio system every two months….yuck.
Anyways. What an angry rant on such a damn lovely day. With that, I’ll close with a few more.

Generally speaking, yes. Every time I have seen anything from the Criterion Collection it has been a pleasant experience. However, just because plenty of great films are from Criterion does not necessarily mean that ALL of their films are worth watching….I will say that as far as the wide world of DVDs are concerned, Criterion Collection without a doubt has the most superior quality. All things considered, is well worth the price given the time invested into giving these films the proper care and respect they deserve.
1. AKIRA <—— Always will be #1 on my list!
2. Yellow Submarine
3. The Snowman
4. Beauty and the Beast
5. Pink Floyd: The Wall
6. Triplets of Belleville
7. The Nightmare Before Christmas
I am a HUGE fan of The Sex Pistols. Starting from the tender age of about ten when I came home with the “Anarchy In The U.K” single from Cheapo records much to the chagrin of my parents as well as my peers….this was in a time where every girl my age was listening to ’NSync and Britney Spears.
Oh, no. Not this devotchka.
I had heard about this film through the grapevine, and eventually when I was fourteen I rented the VHS at Video Stardom. I put it in the VCR at about 1:00 AM long after the parental units had gone to sleep so as not to awaken them with the profane language I was SO ready to listen to.
And basically…my world turned upside down. Because it was the very night where I was introduced….to the one….and the only…..GARY OLDMAN. sigh
Seven years later I am still totally going to marry him forever and ever…but yeah.
Where was I going with this? Oh yeah. The whole “do Pistols fans hate this film” thing. I can understand why a lot of them would hate this. It is incredibly inaccurate and definitely glamorizing the whole affair between the two. If I were Rotten, I would call it ridiculous on its face as well. But I’m not Johnny Rotten. The thing is, I KNOW it’s not the truth. I’ve read way too many books on the subject to decipher fact from fairy tale….
…But I think that’s really all it is when you get down to the bare bones of it…
A punk fairy tale. And a fucking lovely one it is.
I have wanted to walk out on several films; however, the only one I managed to abandon early was “Head of State” a.k.a – a REALLY terrible Chris Rock film.
I had the Ludovico Treatment to “Meet the Spartans” my Freshman year of college, but thankfully it was only a friend’s DVD rental and none of my money was wasted.
Some notable mentions of the toughest films I have ever had to sit through were ahem:
1. “Avatar” <—— Fucking GARBAGE. I literally felt the $30 spent on myself and my date burn a hole in my pocket. And it was from gift cards. So. That’s saying something.
2. “You Don’t Mess With The Zohan” <—— I was at the Drive-In. It was the first of triple features that night, so…
3. “The Ugly Truth” <—- Another Drive-In fiasco.
4. “Hulk” <—- The only good part was Nolte’s “handcuffed freak out scene” in the chair, because I could relate to feeling trapped…
5. “The Butterfly Effect” <—— Wow. 120 minutes of I-could-give-a-shit.
6. “Austin Powers in Goldmember” <—— It had Michael Caine, but ALSO Beyonce…who cannot act to save her life, and she REALLY couldn’t act in this film.
7. “Monster’s Ball” <—— Completely overrated. Halle Berry did nothing special for me. At all. More of the whole, “I-could-give-a-shit” deal going on.
8. “The Ring 2” <—— Really?? Really?? Yes. It really WAS that God-awful.
9. “Glitter” <—— Where something like “Showgirls” is so terrible that you CAN’T stop watching, “Glitter” is just terrible. And you would pay someone to stop it for you. Literally. Pay them.
Wow. That was better than anger management. I feel good now.
“Not too many 16 year olds are watching ‘The Seventh Seal’.”
…..Except ME at sixteen. Also pretty much force-feeding my friends Kubrick, Lynch, and Bergman. They hated it at first. But now (as ‘intellectual college-going 21 year olds’) they think the films are “so deep” and “awe inspiring”.
How about the complete snub to Gary Oldman throughout the ceremony itself?
We see 50+ shots of Clooney and his flavor-of-the-week girlfriend, and of course Brangelina…But where the HELL is Gary?!?!?
This was Gary Oldman’s FIRST Oscar nomination, and (I believe) first time at the ceremony as well! Their treatment of him was apalling. What was up with his seating arrangement? Ususally they have the Best Actor nominees sitting front and center, and poor Gary was on the far left next to the cast of “The Help.”
He was excluded from the opening sketch, monologues, and even the campy camera pans. The ONLY time we saw him was when his category was finally announced.
I am still livid over this, and I really hope I am not alone, here…
