a beautiful poem on love and acceptance
"...and by the inhabitants of Pointe Courte" . I love Agnes; right up front she credits the locals with telling the story; juxtaposing real life passion with the cool detachment of theater. The beauty lies in the compositional detail. A film to watch again, without the audio track. Bravo! Varda, a true and original artiste.
Is it safe to say that those in power are privileged to alter the truth? Masaki Kobayashi explores this idea using the rigid formality of the Samurai code. With breathtaking b&w simplicity depicts one mans courage to stand-fast to his truth allowing him the privilege of facing his death as he wishes: with eyes wide open, heart beating frantically into the soul of a warrior. Brilliant!
Deeply moving, well acted, beautifully photographed anti war love drama. Stunning camera work at train station departure scene. Exquisite finale sequence. Cinema at its best.
Is it obsession or is it art? It is essential viewing.
