I love Le Samourai as well but Le Cercle Rouge could be Melville’s masterwork. I wasn’t a HUGE fan of Army of Shadows (which he considers his best work… or at least his most “personal”). What do you think?
I’m probably not the first to bring this up but as many of you may know, the great Werner Herzog is undertaking one of the most drastic acts of film remaking sacrileges ever in history: Remaking Bad Lieutenant, the Abel Ferrara film.
When I first heard this, I thought it was one big joke but they actually started filming last year. What got me even more upset was that Nicholas Cage is the lead. Need I say more? I just threw up a little in my mouth just typing that.
Although to play devil’s advocate, Herzog claims it’s not a remake and he’s never even heard of Ferrara (let alone see any of his movies), I think it’s all one big, steaming, pile of BULL. Even if he’s never heard of Ferrara, the script is based off of the original story (it’s not like Herzog even wrote it himself) and claiming it’s not a remake (while taking the same name) is pretty ridiculous in my opinion.
What do you think?
BTW, Abel Ferrara had this to say about the filmmakers according to Wikipedia:
“As far as remakes go, … I wish these people die in Hell. I hope they’re all in the same streetcar, and it blows up.”
You don’t know how long I’ve waited for this film to come out. I emailed Mulvaney like 5 times to suggest this movie.
I actually thought that this film would be out on DVD by criterion back in December of last year. They had the 35mm release of the film in the Film Forum in NYC in October of 2008 by Janus…

I would love to see Kobayashi’s Human Condition. I know Janus just released a new 35mm print of it over the summer.
