I’ll add some out of print films: Il Deserto Rosso, Anna (le comédie musicale), La Guerre des Boutons, Zazie dans le Métro, CinéVarda, Chateau en Suède, Boy Meets Girl, La Dentellière, Black Cat, White Cat (Crna macka, beli macor), Celine et Julie vont en Bateau, Paris Nous Appartient, Le Plus Vieux Métier du Monde, & Kes.
Hello you who is reading this, it’s nice to be (somewhat) aquainted. I’m just another person who likes to watch movies in their spare time, though perhaps a little choosy. I work at a video store, so I get to rent movies for free, which is the best reason to work at a video store, I think. I don’t have a college degree in anything, though I enjoy learning, so I may as well get one somehow. Anyway, pleased to meet you, it’s nice to finally meet other people who get excited about Criterion/Rialto/Janus upcoming releases.
Happy-go-lucky. 85/100. Some parts were a little over the top, but the characters were portrayed well and the dialogue was great. I went into it thinking perhaps that I wouldn’t like it much, it didn’t seem like my kind of movie…. but it was a good time, and very well done.
Earlier today: Serge Gainsbourg, the Buzzcocks, Étienne Daho, the Pixies, and the Magnetic Fields. I can always fit some Gainsbourg in. He is my favorite.
I recently finally gave into watching the first in the Bourne series, and I am surprised to admit I actually liked it. Though I generally hate Matt Damon and thought some of the little car chase scene was hilarious, I found a lot of it very pleasing to the eye and will watch the rest in the near future.
I also finally got around to watching Match Point, which was overall good. However, I thought WA used that opera theme way too much, to the point of awkwardness.
I don’t know if I can tell you my favorite, but I’ll name my least favorite so far, “Détéctive” !
Johnny is cool and all, but God, I really don’t understand why JLG made this film.
Ugh, Netflix is evil. Though, I do realize it is the only option for a lot of people. Though, they don’t carry a lot of movies only available in boxed sets.
I agree that some people don’t, but a lot of people do. I happen to work at a video store that has all those movies. And I’ve lived in other cities that had similar videostores that carried Criterion titles like those, in addition to just amazing stuff.
A lot of people like Netflix for the convenience, and I suppose in the end we will probably all have Netflix, or LoveFilm, or what have you.
I used to have Netflix, before I got tired of the sterile, impersonal feel to it. That, and when OOP titles got stolen, they were gone for good.
Besides these things, I know that a lot of independent video stores are having to permanently close their doors because of huge corporate global powerhouse billionaires like Rupert Murdoch, who owns Netflix.
I don’t know my favorite actor, but I can name my least favorite ones. Ben Affleck is so horrible. Josh Harnett is just as bad. Vin Diesel is bad too, but at least he can be amusingly so.
I don’t know if someone mentioned this already, but under add auteurs in the profile section, perhaps the option of adding someone manually to the list, if they aren’t featured.
Criterions dvds are somewhat expensive anyway, but I can always justify the ones I buy.
Moving to Blu-ray is a smart move, even if it is slow at first. I just know I won’t buy a Blu-ray player until more titles come out and the prices come down. It is an expensive system, and I think more people will take the Blu-ray idea more seriously when they can’t compare it so easily to cheaper alternatives like dvds.
My personal top ten: Les 400 Coups, City Lights, Habla con Ella, Brief Encounter, Le Feu Follet, Une Femme est une Femme, Woman in the Dunes, Otto e mezzo, Les Vacances de M. Hulot (or Jour de Fete, I can’t decide), and… L’avventura. Or L’éclisse. This is too difficult and I’ll probably think of a movie in my top five that I left out a few minutes from now.
I love love love Ophüls, how could anyone say such a thing? Though I will say that I prefer his earlier work to Lola Montes. It has a slightly different feel to it.
I know people will poo poo this remark, but I’m going to say Tarantino is an overrated director.
I agree that Spielberg and W. Anderson are as well.
