I like films that make you think, that do not hit you over the head with the conclusions. I also like sophisticated and pointed comedy, as in “Thank You for Smoking”, which is one of the best films ever made. Films that teach you something are also important.
I do not like violence as entertainment (unless it is to teach, such as “Killing Fields” or “Schindlers List”), nor gore for horror for its own sake. Yet science fiction that teaches us something, or makes us think, or gives us an optimistic version of where the future could be, or what we could be, that is wonderful.
And in the end, I am a real American, who likes a way to get to Happy Endings.
