Thorsten: Filmography

Marilyn as the Babysitter from Hell (or, rather: from the Asylum): It's marvellous how she owns this picture. All her charisma, later used for pure sexiness, is pure fragility here. Probably one of her best performances. And a good film altogether, too.

Action that does not leave me dizzy. Liked it. I did not understand the story a bit, though. And Gina Carano is something. Would like to see more of her.

Shame

Carey Mulligan wiped out my Frank Sinatra memory. The rest of the film is good, too.

Everybody seems to hate this movie. It is certainly far from perfect (or even good) but I had a good time and enjoyed myself. It has a strange combination of hypermodern 3D and CGI and is old-fashioned at the same time. And it sure is far more lovable than something like "Transformers".

Agreed. Better than Avatar/Star Wars prequels/Transformers combined. Blockbusters should strive to entertain as much as this does even if it has flaws. We should be so lucky to get films like this every few weeks instead of the utter rubbish we're inundated with. Masterpiece? No. But I'd still take it over most blockbusters in a given year.

Enjoyable, sophisticated 1st half, standard 2nd.

The Kid with a Bike

The Dardennes always astonish me with their ability to let the audience be very much engaged emotionally while never using the slightest manipulative trick. Wonderful film.

Young Adult

A main character who does not learn a thing? Who does not make progression to become wiser and better? Wow, Diablo Cody surely is a daring screenwriter. And that is a good thing.

It's a children's story that did not get my full attention all the time. But I indulged completely in this artificial city, with all the fancy 3D-camera movements, like a steady cam on steroids. And the parts about Méliès and film history were charming indeed.

What's not to like about this? Most entertaining picture I saw in 2011.

River of No Return

Still very watchable because of Marilyn, and especially because she sings a lot. Nice cinemascope shots of canada's beaty. It's a bummer though that Mitchum's pure virility gets distorted when he tries to rape a first refusing, then willing marilyn. The "action" shots on the raft, clearly done in the studio with backprojection, are kind of funny.

One of the lesser known Altman films; I just got hold of it recently. Absolutely loved it.

Now, Voyager

It's marvellous what can be done with cigarettes in a film. One of the top american melodramas; not as popular as it should be.

The rare case of a must-see film that left me impressed but untouched.

If you have seen "It's a wonderful life" too often or are not in the right mood for christmas: watch this one. It will cheer you up no matter how blue you feel. Capra may be a naive fella, but he is so with a very charming persuasiveness.

Audition

It's artistic horror, but horror it is. Coming from a sad beginning and going through an upbeat middle part the film just gets downright disturbing and has graphic sadistic violence in the end. Good film, but not for mostpeople.

Audition

History as an encyclopedia entry, buzzed with an uncountable number of german top actors, some of which are on the screen just for seconds (well, maybe two or three minutes). Not interesting at all.

The Hole

It's a lot like his later "Wayward Cloud" (2004), but without the melons and the porn (but with the central theme of "water"). Long takes with lots of stuff to look at, absurd realism situations and the funny musical numbers may make some people hate the film. But it is really very enjoyable.

beautiful film, but the data is not accurate. It's not the 115 min version but the UK 88 minutes.

Gosford Park

My wife and I watch this at least once a year (It's that rich a movie) and have convinced quite some friends (though with some we failed, they fell asleep within the first hour.). Agatha Christie meets Jean Renoir, kind of a new take on La Regle du Jeu. it is also highly entertaining, especially the performances of Emily Watson, Kelly Macdonald and Helen Mirren are just wonderful.

Pickpocket

My second Jia Zhangke. Similar slow style as in Still Life and a similar passive main character. Found it a bit longish, but that did not bother because there are some extraordinary beautifully shot sequences, for example the one in the karaoke bar with his love interest. Also I really missed the magical stuff from the later films (the rocketship in Still Life). This one here is a more strict neo-realism.

Pickpocket

Damn, that was good. Wonder why it was never released here in Germany, normally a lot of french films cross the rhine. It is a very deep exploration of male (and female alike!) social and sexual bevhaviour and experience. Superb, and not a bit boring despite the 3 hours running time in which nothing is shown but people talking.

Not as good as Panahi's The Circle, but still: does what cinema in Iran does best: documenting the absurdities of its society.
