There was once a great director named Bruno Dumont...the first 30 minutes or so are about the best thing Dumont has ever done: incommunicable fucking in farm country...and then he slides off into territory he knows nothing about and films it badly: in L'Humante, it was the police procedural; in Twenty-nine Palms, it was the USA; and this time the war genre.

Is that what they're called? They shocked me. I grew up with livestock, but those were like aliens.

I wonder, do you have lots of cattle on your ranch? I associate Texas and Westerns with great herds of Herefordshire cattle, but don't remember seeing any Welsh black cattle in the Westerns

We used to run Herefords. But now Angus is all the rage- we have about 500 head. I imagine filming black cattle with the standard B&W film of the time would have stretched the contrast too much- they would probably have looked like black blobs.

I was already an Ali fan in the 60s. The Foreman fight was one of the great sporting moments for sure, and thrilla in Manilla. Hagler-Hearns-Leonard-Duran was a golden patch, a pity when all the different title belts came in, boxing world titles were devalued, and the heavyweight division now is in a sad state.

Fantasies for the deployed working man. X, Z, and H are Sons of Man, and the narrator is Satan. If I didn’t speak Spanish, I would have put masking tape on the screen to hide the subtitles (and missed…  read review

There’s a move afoot to recognize Gremillon as a French master, but I don’t see it with this, my first Gremillon film. I side with Sarris, that a great director must be at least a good director, and…  read review

The Plough and the Stars

The Plough and the Stars

A shell of a film about events of the Irish Revolution in 1918. Ford wanted to cast exclusively with Abbey theater actors and RKO forced Barbara Stanwyck on him (two great artists who are wholly incompatible…  read review

If anyone can point to an earlier film that better prefigures the musical genre, I want to hear about it. This being Lubitsch’s first sound film and musical, I expected something a bit obvious and…  read review
