Movies That Should Be In the Criterion Collection over 2 years ago

Six titles that immediately spring to mind:

- Despair (Rainer Werner Fassbinder)
- The Keep (Michael Mann) – a longer version supposedly exists. There’s also an alternate ending which I’ve seen on YouTube.
- Sorcerer (William Friedkin)
- The Goalkeeper’s Fear of the Penalty Kick (Wim Wenders)
- The Beaver Trilogy (Trent Harris)
- Possession (Andrzej Zulawski)

1997 POLL almost 2 years ago

1. See the Sea (Francois Ozon)

Henry Fool (Hal Hartley)
Deconstructing Harry (Woody Allen)
In the Company of Men (Neil LaBute)
Princess Mononoke (Hayao Miyazaki)
Breakdown (Jonathan Mostow)
Gasman (Lynne Ramsay)
Cube (Vincenzo Natali)
The Sweet Hereafter (Atom Egoyan)
Career Girls (Mike Leigh)
Romy and Michelle’s High School Reunion (David Mirkin)
Grosse Pointe Blank (George Armitage)
Little Dieter Needs to Fly (Werner Herzog)
Fast, Cheap and Out of Control (Errol Morris)
Uncle Sam (William Lustig)
Funny Games (Michael Haneke)

The number one choice was a very tough call. I’d say it’s pretty much a tie between See the Sea and Henry Fool. I ended up picking Ozon’s film as I don’t think I’ve seen it mentioned in any of the lists yet.

New John Carpenter directorial effort almost 2 years ago

I’m a huge John Carpenter fan (he’s quite possibly my favourite filmmaker) so The Ward is definitely the film event of the year for me. However it looks like I may have to wait until 2011 for a UK release. I’m pretty sure that it will get the usual lousy reviews each new Carpenter effort gets, regardless of whether or not it’s actually any good. His later work is really underrated. Even though they are not amongst his best movies I really enjoyed Escape From L.A., Vampires and Ghosts of Mars. They are the kind of hugely entertaining genre films that Hollywood is almost completely incapable of making these days.

Besides the two Masters of Horror episodes in 2005/6 he’s been inactive since he finished Ghosts of Mars in 2001 which is a great shame. It looked for a while as though he may have retired from filmmaking. I really hope The Ward is successful and encourages Carpenter to continue and make more films in future.
