Norwegian Wood

cinematically, it plays kind of like a japanese version of skolimowski’s ‘deep end’, but done 40 years later and with more self-awareness (in a bad way). the jump-cuts and CAN soundtrack just don’t pack the same punch as ‘deep end’ did. the story, being based on a murakami novel, is really sappy and bizarre. the unrealistic, undeveloped, and unrelatable characters are stylishly performed, making for a very cool and memorable movie. it is helpful to have read the book in order to fill in the blanks. the movie is, on its own, just an aesthetically pleasing mood-piece. and that’s fine by me.
