Se7en is a fantastic cop/mystery movie, easily one of my favorite if you are going to group these types of movies together. It is dark, violent, smart, cunning, creative, and original… not to mention great acting, decent style, and decent directing. Is it a masterpiece, not nearly… but is it good? Absolutely. I wouldn’t say its one of my favorite films by a long shot, but it is one of my favorite cop/mystery movies.
The office, south park, how I met your mother, big bang theory, the daily show, the colbert report, and 30 rock are all pretty amazing.
By far the best though, would have to be south park. It is the funniest, the wittiest, and the most direct show on the air. It hits points all of those other shows are afraid to hit, yet it never seems to preachy or political in my opinion. I love it.
Avatar. This was the most hyped, most talked about, and most acclaimed movie by all my friends. I thought it was the biggest piece of trash I have seen in cinema in a long time.
Also, Dorthee… I agree some-what with UP. I didn’t hate it, but as much as everyone talked about it I at least expected it to be par with WALL-E, or Ratatouille. Pixar just didn’t deliver in my opinion, at least not in the caliber of WALL-E, which I thought was brilliant.
I think there are 3 main levels of greatness for movies. There are the most successfully great, the historically greatest, and then the personal greatest. Here they are for me:
Most Successfully Great: Gone with the Wind
Historically Greatest: The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly
Personal Greatest: Pan’s Labyrinth
I will watch… anything with edward norton, seth rogan, leo dicaprio, emile hirsch, clint eastwood in it. Also, I will watch any movie by guillermo del torro, wes anderson, steven spielberg, martin scorsesse, or Quentin tarintino. I have no problem giving anything those people attach their names to a chance. I also really enjoy any like, murder mystery, and pretty much any comedy.
Avatar… what a piece of shit. I only have like, 2 friends that agree with me and genuinely dislike it. I give credit where credit is due, it was a pretty movie, but it was a piece of shit in every other possible way. At least in my opinion haha.
I have never actually walked out on a film… though I have wanted to really badly several times.
The Comebacks is always the first one that comes to mind, I have never seen a comedy before this one that i couldn’t find at least ONE thing to laugh at. Easily one of the most horrible movies I have ever seen.
Lately, Avatar comes to mind… sadly, I even saw it a 2nd time. The first time, I didn’t feel like walking out, but only because I was really hoping at some point that it would be good. The second time I was on a date and she really wanted to see it… I really wanted to kill myself.
Some of the first movies I saw that really sparked an interest for me in cinema as more than just entertainment, but actual art and intellectual medium are uh… lets see. Memento, Requiem for a Dream, Reservoir Dogs, A Clockwork Orange, 2001: A Space Odyssey, The Usual Suspects, and American History X. Probably one or 2 more, but I can’t really think of them.
I pretty specifically remember watching all of these for the first time within a few weeks of each other when I was 15, maybe 16. Quite literally, life changing. A friend had recommended all of them to me, before that I really don’t remember viewing movies as anything more than just fun entertainment.
You will almost ALWAYS find someone, especially in an environment like this one, that hates any movie you like. I think a better way of approaching this would be trying to just find the movies that just fit into the majority consensus of movie goers. Those would be your obvious 2001s, your citizen kanes, and so on. Everyone already pretty much knows those already… so idk how much anyone will really get out of this thread.
Then again, if you asked pretty much anyone I have to deal with at work, they would say that Avatar is the best movie in the world, and that everyone loves it because it would be impossible to dislike it. They are all shocked when I say that its complete shit haha
Honestly, the only 2 movies that really have much of a chance to win are Avatar and Hurt Locker. That is such a sad sad thing in my opinion. I didn’t think Hurt locker was trash, but it most definitely wasn’t the best movie of the 10… or at least of the ones I have seen. Avatar doesn’t even belong on that list, it is so terrible that I honestly don’t know what I would do if it won. I also think that UP shouldn’t be on there at all, it isn’t even almost the best pixar movie, much-less is it even close to oscar worthy.
Of the rest of the 10 nominees, the ones I have seen are all pretty decent. I really loved Inglourious Basterds, and District 9, no matter what everyone else says. Fuck the haters, District 9 ranks pretty high on my list of who deserves the oscar, it was my favorite blockbuster of last year.
I really would like to actually watch A Serious Man before the actual oscars.
Why did I never EVER feel dirty for loving this movie so much until I found this site? haha
I honestly thought it was amazing, I felt like the flow from political to action-packed was quite interesting and intriguing, as was the transformation of the protagonist. I loved the acting, I felt attached to the main character by the end of the film, regardless of how much I disliked his personality at the beginning; I also loved the fact that I became emotionally attached to Prawn that were ugly and couldn’t speak english almost as much as I did to the human characters. I felt the story in its self was completely originally and beautifully presented.
In all honesty, if you went into this film not expecting some sci-fi action, then you were quite delusional. This movie met, and exceeded my expectations in leaps and bounds. Regardless of what people will say, I loved it.
Berjaun… you just said 4 opinions about 4 basic ideas in movies… you neither prove a point, or make yourself look intelligent. I see where you are coming from, but that is as basic as bad critics get.
I simply would like you to actually elaborate on your points if you are going to make points, rather than being extremely vague in every sense of the word. I happen to agree with you, but thats just… super annoying to me. Sorry.
If they started best horror, then they would have to make a separate category for each genre of movie. Someone just needs to bother to make quality horror movies… same with comedy in my opinion. I think both those genre could possibly be up to Academy standards if they were made properly.
Then again… I really don’t like the academy awards to much.
I simply think this, like burtons version of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, were just projects no one should have really done to start with. Leave worn out stories alone. Then again, I haven’t seen Alice yet… considering Lewis Carrol, and Tim Burton, I might end up liking it. In all reality, I will probably hate it tho lol.
I was more talking about actual nominations, specifically in the realm of best picture. Notice, part of why they mentioned horror at the awards to begin with was because no horror films had been nominated since The Exorcist.
I agree with you in some aspects. I do believe that the characters were a bit cliche, as you said, but I also believe that many people in the military really are in the exact same situations that they are. They do come from troubled homes, and the military is usually a last resort… and it becomes something they are good at, so I also understand how “War is an addiction”.
You do bring up one of the 2 things that rather bothered me about the film… or more made them cliche more than anything. One, is as you said, the therapist died the first time he went out. Anyone could have called that, and most people probably did. Another was the scene when protagonist left camp in the middle of the night on a little escapade. You know which one I’m talking about. Not only did I not feel that the scene did not fit the rest of the movie, but I felt that it was just unneeded filler as a whole. I know it was meant to further character development, but I felt that it just wasted time, was was over all unrealistic.
You have to take everything in this film with a grain of salt… and you also have to realize that this is not a film based on bending history or reality [like Inglourious Basterds], but a movie deeply seeded in reality, despite a few flaws. They did a tremendous amount of research as far as the life of the militant, what the people who defuse bombs actually do, the psychology of those in the military, and all of that. This film very much tried to stay bi-partisan as far as political messages go… if you need a meaning, then you could interpret it as a film simply telling us what it is like to be in their shoes.
This was not my favorite of the nominees for screenplay or picture… but on a very technical sense, it was one of the strongest there was.
So uh, thats what I think lol. Not sure if that answers you or not.
I have seen almost all of those, and 100% agree that they are great. Again… I was really referring more to modern times. Those are all classics, and modern classics even, but not much made NOW is up to academy standards. That said, The Shining, and Shaun of the Dead are 2 of my favorite movies lol.
You know what though, fuck academy standards really.
I would like to see more Vonnegut books adapted into film. I personally think that Galapagos by Vonnegut would make a really interesting movie if done correctly.
Clockwork Orange may not be horror on a technical sense but if certain aspects of that film don’t terrify you, or at least creep you out, then I’m a bit worried about you. That movie is not for the feint of heart… in many ways parts of it scare me way more than most “horror” films.
I mean… it explores the psyche of a rapist/murder/psychopath.
