About Me

My name is Drew Gregory, and I’m a 19 year old cinephile and filmmaker. I’ve loved film since I was 3 years old, but didn’t become fully obsessed until I was 11 or 12 when I saw the films of Martin Scorsese and then listened to all of his cinematic suggestions. My life’s goal is to make films that are true to my personal vision as well as being “gifts” to all who view them. Peter Travers is not someone I’m usually a fan of, but in his review of Mike Leigh’s Happy-Go-Lucky he said “Not just a movie, a gift” and to me that is just so true. I’d like to make movies like that. Think Frank Capra meets Elia Kazan with a pinch of Jane Campion. I want to make movies that are thought-provoking pieces of art as well as movies that help mankind. I’d also like to live in Paris.

To the Wonder

I've never been more unsure of my opinion of a film. But as the hours tick by I feel more and more strongly towards this film. I look forward to seeing it again when hopefully I can remove critical analysis and just absorb. Because this has always been how Malick was intended. A failure? A masterpiece? Both?

Nice review of Killing Them Softly! I was also a big fan of the film, I feel that perhaps the film could have made its political points without the underlining (I think the critique of capitalism is woven right into the structure) but it was only a minor quibble. It's definitely a tight film without a second wasted and Ray Liotta gives a truly tragic performance that I think went unnoticed by most people, but it's one of his best performances.

So, you enjoyed The Place Beyond the Pines? I personally cannot wait! How is the third section, with the kids?

Ah! I'm bummed you know the structure going in, but you'll still enjoy it. I understand why people say the first section is the best, but I think it's just the easiest to comprehend. I think both the second and third sections are just as strong and especially so when they recall the previous section(s). Some of the characterization feels odd as the film carries on but it had my trust so deeply that instead of seeing it as a flaw I just saw it as complexity. The mixed reviews do not surprise me, but yes I loved it.
