I don’t know you personally but my advice is when people say to wait to be more mature before seeing certain films ignore them. People told me when I was 12 to wait on many films and finally I said screw it and fell in love with the films I was supposedly too young to enjoy. Now the average 12 year old probably is too immature but the average 18 year old is too immature so know your own maturity and don’t necessarily listen when people tell you to wait (no offense to the people who gave this advice hahaha).
In regards to Kubrick who you say you love make sure to see Barry Lyndon, Paths of Glory, and Eyes Wide Shut. I also just want to say it is great to see a 12 year old who appreciates great films.
I absolutely loved The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. I can’t even put it into words. There hasn’t been a movie that I have come out of and immediately loved it so much in a very long time. Tonight I’m seeing Slumdog Millionaire. And next weekend I will probably see Milk. I am really disappointed I missed Vicky Cristina Barcelona and Synecdoche, NY while they were in theatres. For the people who have seen Che: What did you think?
Well I enjoy Brian DePalma and John Carpenter films but I wouldn’t say they are bad good but not quite good maybe somewhere in between (both have good good films in their filmography though). I enjoy some campy films like Barbarella which is a very bad good movie. When I’m in a certain mood I can laugh hysterically at stupid comedies.
For me it the scene in The Godfather where Michael gets the gun from the bathroom. No matter how many times I see it when he just sits down for like 4 seconds before shooting holy shit my heart is beating fast.
Also the scene in Boogie Nights when they are making the drug deal in that one guy’s house, but this doesn’t affect me quite as much as the other scene.

My list of ultimate horror movies are Rosemary’s Baby, The Shining, Don’t Look Now, The Omen, and Psycho, plus the films of David Lynch give me the creeps (especially Eraserhead).
There are so many great movies out there that no one should be embarrassed, they should just try to see those films. Except maybe Ash : ). Dude you listed a ton of my favorites!
I got Contempt, Ugetsu, and F for Fake. Also I am trying to see all the best picture winners I haven’t seen before the Oscars so I bought Amadeus, Gandhi, and Grand Hotel. Now I have seen all but 5!
Never in theatres but I tend to stay away from movies I think will be bad. At home every once in a while when it is really late, but I always finish it right when I wake up no matter what.
Slumdog will win. Ben Button or Revolutionary Road should win. RR won’t even be nominated. How disappointing, but maybe I will be surprised tomorrow morning.
John Cassavetes Five Films- I still have them together in the slip case and since it is so expensive and i haven’t even finished it.
Taxi Driver- One of my favorite films and this DVD is probably my favorite non criterion special feature wise.
The Godfather Collection- All three Godfather films plus special features.
2001: A Space Odyssey- Another of my favorite films plus it is 2 disc.
Vertigo- Another favorite and is a brand new DVD that was just released.
Seven Samurai- Great film, great DVD, and although I prefer Rashomon this DVD is just so much better.
The Searchers- Great film, great DVD.
8 1/2- My favorite Fellini film with a great DVD.
Dr. Strangelove- A great film and although not a fantastic DVD my house just burnt down so I need a laugh.
Annie Hall- Same as Dr. Strangelove.
Some great films have come from the theme of obsession. From Vertigo, The Searchers, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Lolita to more recently Zodiac. What are your favorite films dealing with obsession?
The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
Doubt
Happy-Go-Lucky
Rachel Getting Married
Revolutionary Road
Snow Angels…..
……To name a few. Also I haven’t seen the acclaimed foreign films due to the theaters near me not playing them so I might have enjoyed those also and will search them out when they are released on DVD.
No not a horrendous year at all. Not amazing but not horrendous.
Well even as a kid I prefered Spielberg films to stupid kids movies but what really made my film watching explode was Alfred Hitchcock and Martin Scorsese. When I was like 10 I was in a whole I’m manly so I want to see scary movies phase so I saw Psycho. I loved it and saw a lot more of his films. I feel Hitchcock is a great place for kids to start because his movies are very entertaining but also great films. I got into Martin Scorsese with a bang. Over a 6 month period I probably saw 3 of his films, and then finally just decided to see them all and did very quickly. I then listened to his suggestions on what films to see getting me into silent and foreign films. I owe my love of film greatly to Scorsese.
I only will watch films online under 2 conditions: If the film does not have a DVD release because then screw them its the studios fault, and second if it is Oscar season and I missed a movie in theaters and want to see it before the Oscars. In the second situation it can onyl benefit the film because for some if it wasn’t for the nomination I wouldn’t want to see it and if I do and love it then I will buy the DVD when it comes out. For example this year before the Golden Globes I wanted to see Happy-Go-Lucky and after watching it online and absolutely loving it I will buy the DVD when it is released.
When talking to people you come across many that are always obsessed on the plot holes of films and how this didn’t make sense and that couldn’t really happen. Often this happens with Hitchcock films and science fiction films. I am perfectly able to see a film and ignore events that might have not really happened or a minor plot hole here and there as long as it is a quality film. What about you?
The movies I have and am deciding from are: The Tales of Hoffman, Fanny and Alexander, La Notte, Ordet, In the Mood for Love, Ugetsu, Do the Right Thing, and Contempt. Help me decide!
Well I want to see Fanny and Alexander the most but I’m going to make the smart decision and not stay up all night. So I’m going with the sign and watching Ordet. All the other Dreyer films I have seen have ripped me to pieces emotionally so I’m excited (I enjoy being ripped apart emotionally by films). : )
Scenes from a Marriage is one of the Bergman films I haven’t seen but will be seeing soon so I can’t help you on that even though every Bergman film is probably worth buying. In regards to Mr. Arkadin it is definitely comparable to The Stranger and is worth seeing multiple times. I say yes it is worth buying.
I am a student film maker and have a question. My video camera is just a hand held camera not a professional camera. I wish I could buy the later but I just don’t have enough money. I have written many scripts that I think are very good. They are real intense, dramatic material though as opposed to jokey and simple. I really want to turn one into a movie but everyone I have talked to has said that it isn’t possible and I need to stick to documentaries and little comic shorts. I don’t like being told I can’t do something and feel I could turn one of these scripts into a good if not great student film. Does anyone think I have a shot at creating something good or will my lack of equipment and inexperience make this an impossible task?
