About Me

My first full-length collection of poetry THE DATE FRUIT ELEGIES was released in November of 2008 by Bilingual Press. I teach writing and literature at a small private university. Among enjoyments are Criterion films and reading film essays.

The Wages of Fear

I showed Wages of Fear to my father-in-law thinking he's never seen it. It turned out that he had when he was about 5 or 6 in Mexico City. The first few images jogged this forgotten memory. I wanted to prod him about how people reacted to the film, but then again, he was only 5 or 6!

Well, thanks a lot, but from the Criterion essays I've read, I think I need a degree in Harvard on film history to get 'em interested, lol. But really, thanks a lot. Hey, I saw you liked Blood Wedding, I bought it right before it went out of print, but I've been so busy lately that I haven't been able to see it; from what I read on your review it seems like it's a must see.

That wasn't me, actually... a different Catherine. Although, I do enjoy Charlie Kaufman and brought up the idea that he should be listed as an auteur even though he's known more for his writing.

Anytime, I'm not precisely an expert on Mexican cinema since most of it wasn't what you'd call auteur-driven or even with Hollywood quality, but there's some nice films from the 1930's/1940's, so if you want to know anything, just ask, I might know, oh, and by the way, the guy you mentioned, he's called Pedro Armendáriz Jr., he's actually a great actor, but he made lots of those silly narco films back in the 80's. He's the son of Pedro Armendáriz, a great and very famous actor from the 1940's/1950's who worked a lot with Mexico's most known (and maybe only) auteur from that time, Emilio "El Indio" Fernández.

Blood Wedding

Blood Wedding

Blood Wedding is an excellent and sucessful study in adaptation. I recommend reading Garcia Lorca’s play first and before you pop in the film think about what you expect to see. At the end you won’t…  read review
