i work in franchise video store in montreal, they have walls of films from the latest dumb hollywood crap to the latest guy maddin or the new max ophuls criterion series. so i can watch pretty much everything i want and easily buy any dvd’s that came out for 2.5 to 5$ each (we have like 40 copies of “man on wire” or “mister lonely” to sale at about 6 or 7$). the job don’t pay much but i’m surrounded by free great films and can watch tarkovsky’s “stalker” or godard’s “alphaville” on ten 52 inches plasma hd tv screens.
Maddin, Cronenberg, Jutra are greats filmmakers without a doubt, but i personally think that Robert Morin is as important as Maddin and you definitely have to look out for the Gilles Groulx films, espacially “Le chat dans le sac”, “Où êtes-vous donc?” and “24 heures ou plus”.
At last, if “Le chat dans le sac” does the top 3 of the best Canadian films among “Mon oncle Antoine”, the number one is most certainly Pierre Perrault’s “POUR LA SUITE DU MONDE”. Not unlike the French “New Wave” and the Italian “Neo-Realism” we, mostly in Quebec, had a “Cinema direct (vérité)” legacy witch later had a impact in France on Jean Rouch and in Brazil on Glauber Rocha.
yeah, “mad men”, i would put that series in my top 10 films of the year…but carnivale is a great exemple too…i would even dare to put some “x-files” episodes in that selection.
six feet under
the sopranos
mad men
flight of the conchords
dexter
south park
30 rock
the office
x-files
lost
monthy python’s flying circus

there is so much interesting stories around film directors; their life, their persona, their legends, legacy…i like to know the personal lives of my favourite filmakers, i’ve been trough ingmar bergman’s “laterna magica”, andrei tarkovsky’s personal diary, jeremy bernstein’s interview with stanley kubrick and so on. it’s interesting to look at the films after you read or heard the personal background of an artist. you don’t see roman polanski’s films the same after reading about is personal life. same as chaplin, lynch, welles, etc…but the one who inspired me this subject is the life of terry malick who remains (and maybe it’s for the best) a total mystery. you can ear some crazy stories from actors and crew members who worked with him on his films, but that’s all you can get because the guy is as recluse as kubrick was.
i think it could be fun to tell some of the stories, legends you’ve heard or read about all those artists…

Ha man, me too, i’m so in love with her! and with scarlett johansson in “lost in translation”.
recently, i found many many similarities with the main character of the flawed “in search of a midnight kiss”. I’m also pretty much the same as john cusack in “high fidelity”, jean-pierre leaud’s character in the antoine doinel series, woody allen in “annie hall” and “manhattan” and so on…

i used to work in a video store with a great selection…before that, i rent them at the national library and at my university (5 free films a week). i used to rent to my local independent video store for couple of years but my personal economy suffered a bit…now i just download from torrent sites…you can find almost whatever you want and in some case, it’s the only way to be able to see the movie without order it online in PAL version because it didn’t get a proper north american dvd release. especially for the french films.
