Hey, great review of "City of Life and Death". I liked the film for the reasons your mentioned. It's great watching a Chinese film about the Rape of Nanking, as we see it mainly from a Chinese perspective, whereas we see it from a Western perspective in films like "Nanking" and "John Rabe". That said, I really liked the latter. I caught a screening of it two years back and I've submitted it onto the database. It'd be great if you could rate/review it! (Sadly there seems to be very few people on Mubi who've seen the film.)
Actually, I had started to watch 'John Rabe' when I decided to look up some reviews and background about the story. With 'historical' films - especially concerning recent history - I can't enjoy it if I'm feeling duped. 'Rabe' struck me as having a slant pretty quickly, and a lot of reviewers confirmed it. That and I had the DVD of 'Ran' waiting for me, so I wasn't in the mood for giving modern filmmakers much leeway ;)

2: Fist(s).
3: Chen Zhen, returning.
The movie satisfied these requirements, but it was still boring as all heck. Donnie… read review

It’s interesting to contrast City of Life and Death (南京! 南京!) with older Chinese films about the war. Other reviewers have already pointed out how humanized the Japanese characters are, and it’s certainly… read review
