I don’t think it’s that amazing and my friends hate me for thinking that! I actually fell asleep in the theater the first time I watched it.
As far as action movies go though, I think it’s one of the more intense, but besides that and Heath Ledger’s acting, there’s nothing that stand out. The plot wasn’t even all that great I didn’t think.
But it’s not just red, white, and blue that are used commonly. Yellow is used just as common as those three. Perhaps it’s that they’re the primary colors (with the exception of white which is all colors together)?
I don’t think there is any specific meaning behind each of the colors, I think it has to do with colors in general and what they tell a viewer. Godard has been quoted ( sorry, don’t have one, but I’ve read a quote) saying his films are mostly nonsense and he doesn’t plant special meanings in his films. It’s up to the viewer to decide for themselves (something Bergman does as well).
I liked it because it was so weird. I haven’t seen a film more strange than Weekend. It’s really similar to Pierrot le Fou (aren’t all Godard movies the same plot? Ah well, they’re great anyways!) but Pierrot le Fou is much better.
The whole concept of it just being made from 1s and 0s is what gets me. If a digital photograph has even the slightest pixelization, it ruins it for me because I can’t get past that flaw. Film however has the similar pixelization, except that it’s the grain of the film, which is much more uniform and does something I can’t describe to a photo except that it’s good.
I think in the future digital cameras (cinema and still) will get to the point where I can enjoy them as much as film but right now the closest they get for me is the Canon EOS 5D.
I really liked it. Some of the acting is terrible, but it’s not all bad. The super 8 scenes of the skateboarders with the ambient music are so great. One of my favorite movies out of recent releases.
I love the old French movies of the new wave era but outside of Amelie (which I loved) I haven’t seen/heard of many other newer french movies. What are some good ones that have come out lately? (like late 90s to present)
Salo or the 120 days of Sodom is really disturbing. I didn’t even finish it. The film was just utter trash, it’s not the piece of art people make it out to be (or at least, I don’t think so). No wonder Pasolini’s family didn’t want it out.
Gus van Sant’s “Death Series.” I think a collection of Gerry(2002), Elephant(2003), Last Days(2005), and Paranoid Park(2007) would make a good eclipse release. Van Sant is a well respected director and these four films were his return to art house following mainstream releases Good Will Hunting, the Psycho remake, and Finding Forrester.
I think this as an Eclipse Series release is just fantasy though.
The Godfather. Haven’t seen it and I don’t really desire to watch them.
A lot of people are saying 8 1/2 which I have not seen yet either but it’s been at my house from netflix for over a month now. I just never get around to it!
He obviously knows what a good movie is; he made La Haine, a critically acclaimed film and had a lead role in Amelie, another astounding French film. Now he puts out shit like Gothika and Babylon A.D.. Has Hollywood tainted him? Or does he not care anymore and just want the money?
I loved both. They’re two different kinds of films so you can’t really count the slow middle part of There Will Be Blood against it when compared to the smooth, exciting pacing of No Country for Old Men.
Both weren’t all that original, especially No Country for Old Men which felt like a reverse Fargo! But that was probably the intent. And I think There Will Be Blood is trying to be a Citizen Kane in that it’s an epic fictional biography reflecting issues of the times.
Pretty much a tie to me so….. No Country for Old Men because it’s more exciting!
I saw this on 60 minutes a few weeks (or a month?) ago. I’ve only seen Diving Bell and the Butterfly and Before Night Falls, both of which I thought were very good. But after watching this interview, I acquired a huge dislike for him (Before Night Falls is still one of my favorites).
He seems like the stereotypical art snob except worst. His yellow tinted glasses, his obsession with a critic that doesn’t like him(8:00-9:40), the undeserved attacks on the interviewer, and his obviously huge ego make me really not like the guy.
It’s 12 minutes, but most of it is on his paintings which you can skip through.
Do you think he deserves to have such a high self-worth level? Has the character of a director ever affected how you view his/her films?
I hope M.I.A. wins an Oscar for her song in Slumdog Millionaire.
She’s gotten a lot of lame attention for Paper Planes all of a sudden (like a year after release!) when there’s so much more to her music than “no one on the corner got swagga like us”. I don’t want the public to write her off as a one hit wonder when she has such a good set of music between “Arular” and “Kala.”
13 nominations for Benjamin Button? Yet 0 one year ago for Zodiac?
My cousin married his niece this summer. He was at the wedding. My cousin nor aunt nor uncle mentioned that John Waters was going to be there at the wedding so we were really surprised. The family has a lot of money and it seemed like no one thinks much of him and he was just the gay uncle that makes dirty movies.
OK. So I wasn’t really at the wedding but I wish I was! My parents and sister went and they got to talk to him (no one else at the wedding even knew of his movies). I didn’t go because I thought it would be boring!
