It sucks. Less than 140 films are available for me to watch. =/

Yeah, that is true, it’s just a bit frustrating. There’s only a handful of notable/decent films in my selection, and a few of them are just Svankmajer shorts, which run for as short as 1 minute. I’m still hopeful they’ll expand it in the not too distant future, though.

SYNDROMES AND A CENTURY (Apichatpong Weerasethakul, 2006) over 3 years ago

I love the way he personifies nature; a mysterious presence that no doubt reflects his spiritual background. So good.

Joseph, I agree about Vincent.

Price himself claimed that the film immortalized him.

What is the one movie, if any in particular, that sparked your interest in film? over 3 years ago

As a 14 year old – Pulp Fiction.
Introduced me to the flexibility of narrative and the fun of toying with suspension of disbelief.

If you had the ability to revive a dead filmmaker, who would you pick and why? over 3 years ago

Ingmar Bergman. He can tell us all about death.

Von Trier vs Tarkovsky about 3 years ago

People are actually trying to dissect the stylistic components of Europa?

I guess that reductionism will be the death of penetrative cinema.

Is liturature a better art form then film? about 3 years ago

There’s still people out there who argue that film itself is not yet an artform.

are there any spielberg films true cinephiles admire... about 3 years ago

War of the Worlds, ET, and Minority Report are the only Spielberg films I truly admire.

Von Trier vs Tarkovsky about 3 years ago

Rob, I don’t mean to condemn the dissection of Von Trier’s work in general, I was referring specifically to Europa. The aesthetic of the film’s employed techniques are often neglected through excessive analysis, which is just as detrimental as the apparent obsession with finding political discourse within the film. After all, isn’t the primary objective of a film to establish a connection with the viewer?

The Search for GOD? about 3 years ago

I just read the first couple of sentences of Nathan’s lecture on religious influence, and laughed. Anybody who subscribes to the belief that the concept of Christ was inspired by Horus is generally not taken seriously in scholarship.

Anyone else not to impressed by Kubrick about 3 years ago

The Shining, Eyes Wide Shut, and 2001 are the only Kubrick films I hold in high regard. The latter is among the greatest films I’ve seen.

@ “Nathan”.

“Twenty times in the course of my late reading have I been on the point of breaking out, ”This would be the best of all possible worlds, if there were no religion in it!!!“ But in this exclamation I would have been as fanatical as Bryant or Cleverly. Without religion this world would be something not fit to be mentioned in polite company, I mean Hell.”

Once again, you are quoting out of context.

Help me appreciate Ingmar Bergman about 3 years ago

I agree with Zach: Winter Light is his best, and also my favourite film.

The Seventh Seal certainly is not among the greatest of Bergman’s works, but the opening scenes of Death by the shore are landmarks of not just cinema, but 20th century art.
