Yes Mr E, Magnolia was what I was referring to.
You cannot go wrong with 2001, so thumbs up.

I’m so sick of hearing about City of God. It’s all over this site!
It just isn’t that good a film.

Anyone who thinks Jane Campion is mediocre obviously hasn’t seen An Angel At My Table, or more importantly, Sweetie.

One time Criterion directors that deserve another shot? almost 3 years ago

Yes, Leigh’s High Hopes should be on Criterion. The DVD released here is in 4:3 eww.
And a nice edition of Secrets & Lies would be lovely.

Why thank you Justin.
I’d did this/these last night because the thread inspired me:

(The white border I like but it doesn’t look great in 3D nor on this white page!)

Derek: I signed up the first or second day it launched!
But I just returned recently due to RT’s absence probably. And I’m not gonna start posting at the replacement one and lose my life again heh.

Wouldn’t you think that if Spielberg has 3 masterpieces, he’s probably not mediocre???

For the record, I think Spielberg is an excellent craftsman who makes much crap.
AI and Raiders are terrific. War of the Worlds is a masterpiece of cinematography and suspense. Minority Report rocks.
I also like his earlier stuff like Duel and Sugarland Express. The rest…too schmaltzy, too Hollywood, too bland.
Stop making “important” films please.

Thanks guys.
Garth, I like your Miyazaki ones. I got the 2D and 3D temp from someone on another forum ages ago. I modified the 3D one a bit for shadow. I design on the 2D one and input those into the 3D using Distort.

Saint Benedict, I thought Wendy and Lucy was one of last year’s very best. Certainly the best American picture (though Wall-E, Julia, and Rachel Getting Married were all damn fine too).

Some oldies:

Michael Haneke: Why are a lot of his films basically film exercises? almost 3 years ago

While I do feel his films are intellectual exercises lacking a strong humanity, you cannot say they are without substance. That’s simply ignorant.

Hidden for instance is a perfectly balanced blend of style and substance (can I add that often style is substance and separating the two can be denying a film its power). If you take its metaphorical subtext as substance that is. I think it’s a perfectly admirable way to comment on the Algerian war.
Funny Games I don’t care for so much. Too smug.
Also, I’m sorry Bobby, but you did say he is “sheer style over substance” without backing it up, even though you admit to not liking his films. Your problem seems to be with his aesthetic acting as a pretentiously political way to comment on film and his values.

Is acting immature a way to relate to your so-called students?

Did I just read your fourth post incorrectly? It reads as trolling sarcasm to me, very much so.

THE DECADE'S 25 MOST ESSENTIAL FOREIGN FILMS (PaSte Magazine) almost 3 years ago

I don’t understand why Diving Bell is “essential”. It was OK, but, come the fuck on.
Syndromes and Malady now we’re talking.

I have seen Jindabyne twice now. It’s decent, but has a few problems for sure. His earlier films Lantana and Bliss are terrific. Particularly the former, which is a personal favourite. The best Australian film ever made, in my opinion. Or at least tied with Hanging Rock.
Might attempt a Jindabyne cover later.

Good Jaspar is good.

More people need to see Lantana. My avatar/picture thingy is of the film, I just remembered.
