So many great choices here, everybody! I have very fond memories of Altman’s BREWSTER McCLOUD. To my knowledge, it’s never even been on DVD. Another film I’d like to see given the Criterion treatment: Frank Perry’s PLAY IT AS IT LAYS [despite the fact that many hate it].
I distinctly remember the vivid blues in the Metro station, but the currently available DVD captures none of the detail. This is a gorgeous Wim Wender/Robby Mueller work that deserves the Criterion treatment.
amazing. what a masterpiece. just saw this for the first time last night on HDNet. at this point, all i can say is WOW. eager to see it again. lusting after that Rialto boxed set even more now.
saw HUNGER today — these two films would certainly make a devastating double bill.
Christopher, I saw Steve McQueen’s far more recent HUNGER, about Bobby Sands and the IRA. While a radically different film from AOS, seeing them both within a 24-hr period was a powerful reminder of just how horribly people can treat one another. if i may so oversimplify.
btw, i went out today and splurged for the two-disc ARMY OF SHADOWS, even though it’s still available for free on Sundance On Demand, because this is such a great film that I must own it.
VIRGINIA WOOLF only rates 3 out of 5??? Wow! You must be very young. May I humbly suggest that you re-view it after you’ve been around the planet a little longer. Having seen it as a teen when it first came out, I’ve drastically changed my opinion of it over the years. For me, it’s a perfect adaptation of one of the best plays of the last century, and I hope you’ll give it another shot, later on.
au contraire, 100000. quite the opposite, in fact. where are you seeing all these dicks? the dick is the one body part that primarily heterosexist filmmakers go to such great lengths (!) to avoid showing. or if a glimpse IS shown, it’s too brief to be seen by the human eye. probably several reasons for this: the resistance of some actors to show it all, as well as an assumption that that-most-marketed-to straight male adolescent audience might be made to feel “icky” — or inadequate — at the sight of a penis. on the other hand, the female bush/breasts, etc. are frequently lingered upon ad nauseum. now if you’re suggesting a clinical examination of a female’s interior, perhaps you have a point — but is there anyone out there who’d really want to see such a sight??
i also note that nudity seem so much more natural — no big deal — in non-american films. we just can’t seem to move past our puritan roots.
I remember Cathy Burns chancing upon Barbara Hershey with a seagull on the beach, saying “What are doing to the bird? WHAT ARE YOU DOING TO THAT BIRD?” Weird line to remember, but … Is that why she changed her name???
I tho’t The Swimmer was an interesting film but wasn’t crazy about it. I was, however, most fond of the much-maligned adaptation of PLAY IT AS IT LAYS. Love everyone in that cast.
I’m also a fan of RANCHO DELUXE but had forgotten that Perry directed it.
He is also responsible for the execrable Streisand STAR IS BORN, as I recall.
I love love love NASHVILLE, but I’ve gotta agree with Jerry Johnson’s comment that PAYDAY is the best film ever about country music — and one of the best about the music biz, period. Beats the hell out of CRAZY HEART.

I’m sure there were some great films made in 2011. I’ve seen a few, although many of the most-praised films have not yet made it to a theatre near me. But I’d have to agree that, based on the movies I’ve seen so far, 2011 has been a weak year.
And one more question: can someone please explain what exactly you liked about TREE OF LIFE? I hated it, found it to be the height of pretension. An exceptionally boring film and a waste of my time. No offense. I just don’t get what there was to like about this movie.

Amen to supporting your public libraries — and their wonderful DVD collections!
I just watched YOUTH OF THE BEAST and LE BOUCHER this past weekend — for free, thank you very much.
My local branch features most of the Criterion library, not to mention old musicals, films noir and pre-code comedies.

… I’ve come to Melville late, and what a treat it is. This really is a film noir in color — colors that I want to paint rooms.
[Army of Shadows is equally good.]
