Yeah, I love the library. I didn’t even have a card until I saw someone return Seven Samurai at the library in the mall. I got one that day and walked out with 5 Criterion DVDs under my arm, how great is that!
I do buy must-haves, and often the eclipse or essential art house collections, as they are much more affordable.
He is not without his faults, but he managed to make a unique style for himself, and his characters are always highly enjoyable. One thing I like is how he mixes a wide range of characters, emotions, and stories into one entertaining story.
If I was the walkin’ out type, I would have walked out on Crash, Pirates 1 (didn’t see the others), Iron Man (I would have, but I was seeing it with friends).
Actually, now that I think about it, I did walk out of the new Rambo, and Cloverfield (just got tired of watching some guys feet while he screams and runs around)
It’s a Wonderful Life
Brief Encounter
Wings of Desire
Paris, Texas
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
Lost in Translation
Punch Drunk Love
Life is Beautiful
I have yet to see it, but I read an interview with Rourke recently, and it seemed he knew very well the similarities between The Ram and himself. He said it was very hard to act, and went into some dark places, but that is exactly why the movie is so interesting to me. Who could play the part better than someone who is actually living it right now. I have no comments on the movie itself, as I am still waiting for it to come to my city as well.
Irreversible is definitely the most hauntingly violent movie I have seen. The most violent (number of violent occurrences) that I have seen would probably be Ichi the Killer, although that one was far less disturbing to me than Irreversible.
I second that the ending to There Will Be Blood was great. It was a perfect ending to the movie, dissatisfying and eerie.
I’ve always thought M. Night Shamalayan movies have terrible endings. There is always some random event or revelation at the end that has nothing to do with the story up to that point. Its a little bit frustrating.
There are lots of other bad endings out there: Basic, High Tension, Secret Window, pretty much any “split personality” ending.
I will never watch Irreversible again. It was well done, but it was just too hard to stomach.
Also, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. I liked it, but it seems when the wonder of reverse aging wears off, it wouldn’t have much more to offer. Obviously there is a connection but it reminded me alot of Forrest Gump.
I like them both in different ways, so I will be boring and say equal. RD has such a tight structure, and great pacing, plus the characters have so much more depth. PF has such a broad range and vast scale that you really see many stories at once. There is far less depth and seriousness, but it is very relaxed and fun to watch. They both have ups and downs, I prefer RD when alone, PF with friends.
But I agree with Calero, Tarantino has serisously gone downhill lately
I agree with Mr Fuffcans. The fact that you are still comparing brand new movies to Unforgiven shows its greatness and long lasting appeal. Slumdog was a very interesting take on a straightforward story, with a non-surprising ending. If you saw the trailer, you saw the whole movie. I still very much enjoyed Slumdog, for what it was.
Wow, I had no idea In Bruges was so highly thought of. I will have to check it out.
I would like a Synechdoce, New York nomination at least, for screenplay. I haven’t seen any of the years big contenders yet, as none of them have had a release in my city yet really. The Wrestler is opening next friday, and Gran Torino tomorrow.
From what I hear, Winslet in Revolutionary Road looks like a good pick though.
It seems Criterion likes releasing several works from a director at once, so here are some combos I would love to see
Memento / Following – Nolan
Children of Men / Y Tu Mama Tambien – Cuaron
Requiem for a Dream / The Fountain / Pi – Aronofsky
Punch Drunk Love / Magnolia / There Will Be Blood – PT Anderson
Run Lola Run / The Princess and the Warrior – Tykwer
And heck, maybe even some Coen Bros, Blood Simple / Fargo / Raising Arizona to start? Even a few David Lynch titles would be great.
I dont think that Darjeeling will get the Criterion release right away, but one day I am sure it will. It just has to build up a bit more interest first I think.
As for Elephant, it seems likely to me, since they already have a number of Van Sant titles. Drugstore Cowboy is another good one, although not in the last 5 years (sorry).
As a fan of Tom Tykwer, especially The Princess and the Warrior, I was just wondering what people generally thought of his movies. They are very technically impressive, very original, and always interesting.

WHAT MODERN...AMERICAN...HORROR FILMS SHOULD BE ADDED TO THE CRITERION COLLECTION? over 3 years ago
The Shining – we need some Kubrick in the collection.
I’d also agree with The Fly.
Ones I like, but would not expect to see on Criterion include Blair Witch, and Hard Candy.

I think that Mullholland drive fits the Neo-Noir description, it’s dark, moody, mysterious, and has the femme-fatale aspect covered.

I hate all Harry Potter movies, if you can even call those “great films”. They seem to have a following, but I just can’t get into them.
