Mr. Fuffcans: Filmography

17 Dec 11
Psycho

although the "shocking" reveal at the end of the film has lost its impact (the whole theatre i was in burst out laughing at that bit) it is undeniably a masterfully crafted suspense movie.

Vampir

The film is a great example of how quietness can build tone better than sound or even dialog; much of the exposition is delivered by title cards and thank god as the boring explanations given would destroy the movie with their banality if delivered any other way.

L.A. Confidential

its only failing is the ending where it throws all of its masterfully crafted suspense and mystery for a typical dumb shoot out...

I disagree. The shootout is anything but dumb. It's both those characters taking the story to the end of the line while asserting their loyalty to each other, which, obviously, was designed to appear unlikely at the beginning of the movie. The way they resign themselves to the fight as the cars pull in around them is not only a function of plot but an expression of character. And that's why the shootout works. It all serves character. Sure, there are a few genre moments in that scene, like where Cromwell spills the beans and stuff like that, but it's acceptable in my opinion. On top of all that good stuff, it's a very well-choreographed action sequence. It's clever and gripping and surprising.

All About My Mother

its a story of self discovery that never seems like it panders or simplifies the characters conflicts for the sake of good feelings.

Ed Wood

it switches tones from side splitting funniness to heart breaking drama but it never miss steps when it does. it is perhaps tim burton's finest work; it doesn't look like a tim burton movie (i'm talking edward scissor hands or sween todd) but it is unmistakeably one of his movies. 10 stars!

Heat

its talent is wasted on a script that is far too bloated and self important (seriously 3hrs???) i would have loved to have seen a tight gritty cop drama starring perhaps the two greatest actors in popular film but this is not it.

Black Swan

i'm glad aronofsky got back to making his pictures have striking imagery as although the wrestler was a damn fine movie its visuals were purposefully underplayed. its also just a solid psychological thriller and well worth a watch for any fan of the genre or players.

The King's Speech

its a feel good movie and a well done one there is nothing about it that is truly exceptional and is simply a solid genre entry.

True Grit

certainly a solid entry into that genre and well worth a watch however i found that during the last 20 or so minutes i found the story just didn't have enough pull to keep my mind from wandering.

Traffic

Del Toro's great performance and unique visual design makes the mexican scenes the stand parts of this film and i honestly wish there were more of them. The rest however makes me question why this film was so hailed upon its release.

The Sword of Doom

if anything its worth it to watch not one but two samurai legends share the screen together

Throne of Blood

My favorite Kurosawa film, he and mifune are at their top notch and craft a delightful and inventive adaptation of a great shakespearean play.

Throne of Blood

as solid as the original in terms of cinematic achievement however i was disinterested in the flash back sequences although beautifully designed and acted the events were honestly not that interesting to me.

For All Mankind

it shows us images so startling in their barren beauty that they sear themselves into your memory, and as a first hand account of perhaps mankinds greatest modern achievement its the next best thing to going to the moon for yourself.

Dawn of the Dead

Back when Zombies weren't just a "high concep"t for countless movies and comic books and novelty items the genre actually had something smart to say. Although i do find it a tad bit boring so i don't watch it all the time lest i fall asleep.

Dawn of the Dead

Taxi Driver

a heartfelt and beatiful film about how chronic loneliness can turn slowly but surely to psychosis and then finally to violence. A brilliant film only undone at the end with an unnecessary and turgid epilogue.

Taxi Driver

The Killer

John Woo's magnum opus with the theme of cop and criminal connected explored even deeper than in Hard Boiled and streched to all out opera, anyone looking for movement and violence captured as art should look no further.

The Killer

Kagemusha

although filled with striking visuals and questions of personal identity if found this film to be more than a little unfocused and overlong. However many of the striking visuals and overall world weary tone would be carried over to the excellent RAN

Jackie Brown

Tarantino's writing and witty dialog does not take center stage in this adaptation (his first) instead he seems to focus on directing both a story and his actors. both of which he does very well.

Into the Wild

i found this movie to be excrutiatingly painful to watch for its running legth for the simple fact that i did not in the least like mr. mccandless he was in short an Ass.

Alien

certainly a shining example of how horror movies can contain subtext psychological and sexual and make something well... horrific out of them.

The Thin Red Line

a moving and poetic war film as subtle as Saving Private Ryan was brutal. and stands as my favorite film from Malick

Scarface

Pacino Gives one of his most memorable and charismatic performances in this film that twists the quest for the american dream into a journey of violence, lost morals, and ultiamtely tragedy.

The Rock

Bay's best movie and the only one worth watching to get the most out of his brand of slick brain dead movie making. The movie rides on the performances of the Great Sean Connery, Ed Harris, and nowadays uneven Nicholas Cage.

RoboCop

When I first watched i was honestly expecting a trashy sci-fi cop movie (not a bad thing mind you) but what i got was a great if violent story about identity and the triumpth of the human spirit in the face of a cold robotic world.

Requiem for a Dream

the ending hits like a hammer right into your stomach and face, a brutal look at what addiction can do to even the most innocent and well meaning of people.

Full Metal Jacket

A gripping (oddly enough complete in terms of narrative) opening manages to save the rather dull last half of this visually striking Vietnam war pic

Full Metal Jacket

beautifully shot and scored Wong Kar Wai gives a feast for the eys ears and heart.

Ghost in the Shell

Stellar Design, art, and animation (for 90's anime...) can't at least for me save a cluttered and confusing storyline.
