While not my favorite sequence ever, I have always felt that Johnny Boy’s walk through the bar set to Jumping Jack Flash in Mean Streets is the definition of cool.
I would love to see Little Odessa in the collection. Not only because it is an excellent movie, but because there is no good DVD out for it. Pioneer released a widescreen version with a few extra features, but it is not anamorphic and it is out of print. The current release is fullscreen with no features, so I have to wait for it to come on Sundance to watch this beautiful film. I hope there is no licensing issue that could prevent them from adding Little Odessa.
Just wanted to say that the Gus Van Sant Death Trilogy covers from earlier have made me hope that Criterion someday releases that set. Amazing work, everyone, keep it up.
The first Criterion I watched was a a copy of The Third Man that I got my dad as a birthday present. The first Criterion I watched that actually belonged to me was the Brazil box set. I can still remember what it felt like to purchase it. Good times.
I posted this in the thread for movies that should have a Criterion release, but I think Little Odessa is perfect for The Auteurs. It is perfect for the site and I don’t know about any licensing issues that could keep it from happening.
I played a minor role in a mockumentary that some friends of my sister were making. Now, this was a really small part of a student film, so it wasn’t anything major. Through the whole shooting I just kept looking at the camcorder that they were using, just examining it. I had never really looked at one like that before. At some point after I got home I watched Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid on Turner Classic. Something clicked, and from then on I wanted to make movies.
This happened about three or four years ago. It’s become such a focus for me it was hard to remember the exact moments that set me off.
