James Schultz: Filmography

Federico Fellini

Yes, he is among the two or three best directors in Cinema history. His magical brand of cinema will be with me til the day I die. What gifts he gave us! His work with Giulietta Masina, the greatest actress ever ~and Fellini's wife~ is especially endearing. Thank you Federico, for everything you gave us. And Thank You Criterion Collection for giving us his most beautiful films in absolutely wonderful editions, esp. 8 1/2, Juliet of the Spirits, I Vitelloni and Amarcord. The artwork is gorgeous! Anyone who doesn't have these...buy them immediately.

Woody Allen

I hope our friends at Criterion are still adding films to the website. For example Woody Allen and Spike Lee are each limited to a couple films each when there are many that I would like to add to my profile, like Allen's Crimes and Misdemeanors, Shadows and Fog, Bullets Over Broadway, Manhattan Murder Mystery, Zelig~and Spike Lee movies like Malcolm X, etc. Don't listen to those that say Woody's movies from the 80's and 90's aren't worth the effort. I haven't even mentioned Sweet and Lowdown, Stardust Memories, Husbands and Wives, Everyone Says I love You or Deconstructing Harry.

One of the two or three best directors working today. There Will Be Blood is his masterpiece but Magnolia and Punch-Drunk Love are equally important and I am stunned that Punch-Drunk Love is not listed on this website in order to add to My Favorites. PDL is one of the most brilliant, least understood films of the last 20-30 years.

La strada

Along with 8 1/2 this is Fellini's best. How can you not like Giulietta Masina? She happens to be my favorite actress of all time and her work in La Strada, Nights of Cabiria and Juliet of the Spirits is for the time capsule. And Fellini is definitely on my list of the two or three greatest directors of all time. One of the great landmarks of cinema history.
