Are we using The Criterion Collection as a catch-all term for the entirety of the film canon? Like, entry into this supposed collection isn’t necessarily evidence that you’ve made something worthwhile and lasting nor is it supposed to be representative of film history.
There’s a lot of stuff I’d love to see be released by the company, like some Bruce Conner, Emile de Antonio, and others but unfortunately probably aren’t too profitable. Honestly, directors like Conner and de Antonio aren’t all that obscure; at least one of their films have been canonized to an extent. And at least de Antonio’s on DVD.
Hou Hsiao-hsien definitely. I would love to see his work in actual watchable conditions; the three that are currently on DVD in fine forms are revelations.
Didn’t finish the trailer because it looks like it’s one where it attempts to tell the entire movie in two-and-a-half minutes.
I’m not quite sure how I’m supposed to feel about Tobey Maguire playing intense. Remember when he punched George Clooney in “The Good German”? Remember “The Good German”? Well, the punch like disrupted several abstract fabrics and removed me from the movie and Cate Blanchett’s glorious accent.
Not exactly a film in the strictest sense, but the Zapruder assassination footage. I’ve seen it (inevitably) and it’s as harrowing an event to depict as imaginable. Neverminding the outside context of the subject (if you will…), just seeing someone, uh, die in like actuality is too much.
Otherwise, I suppose I’m game for anything whether or not I enjoy the actual experience.
Hrmph. Andrew Dominik? I’m no massive fan of “AOJJBCRF” but it’s certainly well-regarded by others. Indisputable one-timers would be Laughton (through no fault of his own, I’m sure), Tommy Lee Jones, and…the guy that directed Leolo…?
I’m sure I could dredge up my own personal one-timers but I think it’s more interesting to find consensus one-timers, if you will.
There’s really no reason to be ashamed over having not seen a movie (unless your personal self-worth hinges upon it). BUT, that said, haven’t seen any of these well-regarded canon classics:
The Birth of the Nation
The Magnificent Ambersons (waiting for DVD—-don’t have access to TCM)
Modern Times
Intolerance
The Apu Trilogy
Greed
To Be or Not To Be
Stagecoach
His Girl Friday
Also: I’ve only seen “Rome, Open City” out of Rossellini’s oeuvre, which I honestly don’t remember. So, I might as well say I haven’t seen any.
Tarkovsky. I dearly love his “Andrei Rublev” and “Solaris” but have yet to extend beyond those two. Considering my love of what I’ve seen, a thorough investigation of his work should be in order but I suppose I’m awaiting the opportunity to see all the others on an enlarged screen, projected from a pristine print.

You can loop some of the more-repetitive pieces. Or maybe like individual sections of the piece
This is, from what I gather, a chilling place of some variety and I find repetition induces calm (a sort of chilling-out).
But….fuuuuuck…fireworks are firing out my window. Probably not a good sign that I haven’t joined the drunken masses.

At the risk of sounding like an asshole: The films you listed under your ‘Wants to Watch’ heading sounds like a good start.
If you’ll be with a laptop, you could catch up on the wonderful offerings from The Auteurs.

What’s off-putting you to “A Christmas Tale”? I mean, besides the title.
Pretty sure “Monsoon Wedding” is your monolith-sized obstacle at this point
