Monte Walsh about 3 years ago

Any fans of William Fraker’s “Monte Walsh”? It’s one of my favourite films. I love its engaging elegiac mood. Pity it’s not available on DVD.

What's Wrong With Armond White? about 3 years ago

I haven’t read much of Armond White’s criticism, but I did by chance read a piece he wrote on Jean-Pierre Melville’s Leon Morin, priest. I thought his review was quite insightful. It’s one of my favourite films.

Any admirers of Dieterle’s “Vulcano”? It’s a great film, with a wonderful performance by Anna Magnani.

What's Wrong With Armond White? about 3 years ago

Well, I recently read Armond White’s reviews of Terence Davies’"Of Time and the City", the Coens’ “A Serious Man” and Jean-Pierre Melville’s “Léon Morin prêtre”. On the basis of these pieces alone, I would suggest that White brings intelligence and thoughtfulness to his writing.

Nobody has yet explained what exactly is wrong with Armond White? Everyone seems to be engaged in personal and subjective rants.

Another great modern Italian film is “Kaos” by the Taviani brothers. It’s based on 4 short stories by Luigi Pirandello.

Also Rossellini’s Il Messia (The Messiah). It’s as good as Pasolini’s Il vangelo secondo Matteo.

Although made by Dieterle, I would also include “Vulcano” as a great Italian film, with the wonderful Anna Magnani.

Favorite Gérard Depardieu film? about 3 years ago

In some ways, just like a good wine, Gérard has improved with age. One of his best roles in recent years has been in Xavier Giannoli’s Quand j’étais chanteur.
There’s something almost Falstaffian and also of the ‘everyman’ about him.

Jane Eyre about 3 years ago

It’s a pity that Franco Zeffirelli’s JANE EYRE is not available on the Auteurs. I thought that William Hurt and Charlotte Gainsbourg both did a great job in their respective roles. It was a good adaptation of the novel.

Someone mentioned Eyes Wide Shut. I think it is a very good film indeed, and one of Kubrick’s best.
