Some of these are more from 2000 to now but I couldn’t help mention them.
The Fountain – due to it’s incredibly bad DVD release
The Wrestler
Let The Right One In
Twilight Samurai
Battle Royale – Very hard to find a copy of and very entertaining
Vengeance Trilogy (Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance, Oldboy and Lady Vengeance)
Brick
The Lookout
The Fall
The X rated cut is just with the gratuitous amount of violence they had to cut out to drop it to an R. It fills in the film much better when included but I have only found it in the Criterion release so far.
@Henry Krinkle, thank you for defending Life Aquatic which is easily one of the sharpest and most original comedies I have ever seen. I haven’t seen Royal Tenenbaums for years but when I saw it I hated it.
@Futurestaff Have you ever seen Hard Boiled? That is easily one of the greatest action films ever made and still holds up. The plot is pretty good for an action movie and you even get to see Tony Leung in an early role.
You guys wanted suggestions, here’s some that could be good.
The Verdict, Vengeance Trilogy (Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance, Oldboy, and Lady Vengeance), Shaolin Soccer, Leon the Professional, Predator, Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, The Hustler, Gandhi.
I watched it recently and was disappointed with the quality as well. What’s odd is that the trailer packaged with them looks like it is a better print if I remember correct.
Brandon, your cover for The Fountain is what i always wanted to see for a Criterion release, which I believe it should get. And now I need to see Come and See even more.
Drew, I am in love with The Thing. Another movie I must see.
What a perfect response. Those people upset me greatly and it is because of them (stupid modern times) that there is rarely ever new black and white movies.
I’d also consider;
City of God, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, Memento, The Twilight Samurai, No Country For Old Men, There Will Be Blood, Pan’s Labyrinth, Children of Men, Wall-E, The Wrestler.
City of God (2002)
Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (2000)
Let the Right One (2008)
The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou (2004)
Memento (2000)
No Country for Old Men (2007)
Oldboy (2003)
Pan’s Labyrinth (2006)
The Twilight Samurai (2002)
Wall-E (2008)
Joshua W, would you inform me of these great qualities in The Happening? I liked the way it looked….sometimes. That’s about it. Everything else was either flawed, ridiculous, or terrible. And I refer to everything from the characters, plot, foreshadows, deaths, camera angles (etc.).
I thought M. Night did quite well with The Sixth Sense and Unbreakable. Both are really good films with interesting ideas, despite the massive lapse in logic Sixth Sense has. I thought Signs was a masterpiece of a thriller….until the end and it all just fell apart.
I really dislike The Squid and The Whale. It just comes off as Baumbach coming up with this really terrible family dynamic that could never happen, replace the parents occupations with anything else and I bet everyone would have called it on it’s mediocrity. Yet, he helped write Life Aquatic which is brilliant. Go figure.
Lost in Translation is well made and might grow on me but I really don;t care for it. Boondock Saints is terribly overrated.
I rented it way back but I don’t remember if there was anything wrong with the video. I do remember I was disappointed with it, despite that awesome ending.
I can’t believe I have never thought of this. I’m a fucking idiot. I am going there the first opportunity I get and going through, it’s not the biggest library but we should have some of the films I’ve hunted for for years.
Ralph, you said there was a lack of comedies, people are now bringing up comedies that are Criterion and what Criterion seems to aim for, which is an understandable conversation to have based off of your query. People HAVE agreed with some of the Marx Bros, Chaplin and the rest, we’d love to see them. Just because people have different tastes in comedies doesn’t mean we are misguided young people who have nary a shred of respect for the old times when drugs and violence were either nonexistent or slapstick, not dark humor.
I believe your comment on the French and English can be directed back at you too.
Rogers Video is having a big sale right now on Previously Viewed so I have picked up

Dersu Uzala

My grandparents also just gave me their Criterion copy of Benjamin Button.
Actually the reasoning behind Kurosawa and Mifune is much different then the reasoning mentioned. I can’t recall exactly but the author of the book Red Beard is based off of had problems with Mifune’s performance and thought Kurosawa should have went another direction in casting. Kurosawa was bothered by this comment quite a bit and, paired with him and Mifune already having done so much together, split up without quarrel. I remember a heart breaking part was that when Mifune was very ill he wanted to see Kurosawa one last time. Kurosawa heard this and went to see him to tell Mifune of everything he has done for him (or something to that effect) but Mifune had already died. Mifune’s daughter or wife, can’t remember which, said they felt Mifune needed to see Kurosawa one last time and to hear those words.
Anyways, these are my favorite movies of his that I have seen.
1. Seven Samurai – My first Kurosawa and such a beautiful epic. Enough has been said of it.
2. Yojimbo – Love Mifune’s performance in this and Kurosawa’s excellent blend of humor and action. Also has one of the most intense and darkly humorous endings in film.
3. High and Low – I was surprised with how much I loved this one. Proves that Kurosawa truly was a master of whatever genre he took up.
4. Ikiru – A touching piece on coming to terms with what you have done with your life and what effect you leave on the world.
5. Sanjuro – Again, love the performances but I love the evolution of Mifune’s character. Also, one of the most intense endings in film.
Dersu Uzala and Do’Des-kaden are still sitting on my shelf to be watched and the others I have seen are Rashomon, Throne of Blood, Kagemusha, Ran, Drunken Angel.
