Ryan Estabrooks: Filmography

Kiss Me Deadly

So I'm watching and watching...trying to put the puzzle pieces the together, thinking that it's just okay. Then it gets progressively better and better. Then it finally starts tying up all of the ends and hits you with that ending, easily one of the best endings I have ever seen in a movie. An extra star just for the ending alone.

Tiny Furniture

I really wanted to like this film, to see what all the acclaim was about for a "new voice". I was excited. Unfortunately, I couldn't even make it through the entire movie. It was surprisingly dull but worse than that, the jokes fell completely flat. It was basically every cliche I hate about independent film rolled up into one piece. It felt very uninspired and lazy. Better luck next time

Perfect! A dream come true for me

4 stars for the movie, 5 stars for Bill

This would have normally gotten 4 stars but I gave an extra star for Alfonso Cuaron, his directing on this film was amazing and inspiring.

Surprisingly great! It mixes tons of humor with character development, genre subversion and a great amount of heart. A ton of fun! Check out the podcast I did on this film at http://ryanestabrooks.com/Podcasts.html

Exactly what you would expect it to be...amazingly off-the-wall! Definitely only for fans of the TV show, I wouldn't expect anyone else to appreciate this style of humor

The Artist

A charming, quick-paced film that already knows what you're thinking before you walk into the theater. It's great to see a film focus more on the physical and visual aspect of filmmaking, letting the pictures do the talking. The Help

A bit of a wasted opportunity, this film does not know how to build drama or tension at all. All of the "important" parts of the era were name checked and passed over, completely squandered. A few fine performances dot the film but it's not enough to save it. You can listen to my podcast episode on this film at http://ryanestabrooks.com/Podcasts.html

Moneyball

A different type of sports film that focuses more on the dedication and determination of the people behind the times who truly love the sport. Brad Pitt is fantastic and the film flies by. The bit with his daughter was cheesy and unnecessary but everything else was very good. You can listen to my podcast episode on this film at http://ryanestabrooks.com/Podcasts.html

Midnight in Paris

Very charming film full of life, love and history. If it doesn't make you smile once during the entire runtime then you must be made of stone and do not enjoy life, happiness or fun. You can listen to my podcast episode on this film at: http://ryanestabrooks.com/Podcasts.html

Midnight in Paris

Absolutely fascinating! I have seen this several times and it never gets old!

Winnebago Man

Mostly great overall. I wish a different director would have made this film, however. He came off as very whiney and would not just shut the fuck up and let Jack talk! There is no reason why he could not have simply let him talk about politics AND brought him to the film festival and meet the fans. It was like he was intentionally trying to piss him off.

The Grey

Fantastic film, it certainly has a rawness to it that puts you in survival mode. All this talk about how realistic the wolves are is beside the point of the film. The big question is, when you die, who will you be thinking about? And what will you look back on? Check out my podcast episode on this film here: http://ryanestabrooks.com/Podcasts.html

The Grey

This trailer...I just...-sigh-... It must be nice to keep making the same shit over and over and have big stars sign on for roles.

Wow, this trailer looks like shit. I don't think they really understood what made the original work, seeing the things that they decided to change.

Out for Justice

PURE COMEDIC GOLD. The biggest lesson I learned from this movie is...when a guy cuts you off in your car, be careful about calling him out on it. He may calmly walk up to you, grab you by the hair and shoot you in the face.

Out for Justice

A little too old-fashioned for my tastes but it has some great moments and is worth a watch.

Black Moon

Completely fell in love with this film! It feels like I'm watching a crazed fantasy, amazing!

Black Moon

Really fantastic film. I feel that many of those who dislike wanted it to be this snarky, post modern, ironic film. It is not. It is a 1940's film through and through and it flaunts it for all it's worth. If hearing "Pick on somebody your own size!" makes your head explode, don't watch this. It is not for you. However, if you like the 1940's decade and it's naivety & innocence mixed with pulp sci-fi, check it out.

Hobo with a Shotgun

A bit of a missed opportunity. There are some good parts here and there but the mediocre writing is the main culprit. Rutger is the only saving grace in this thing. Skip it and watch "Machine Girl" or "Tokyo Gore Police" if you want some bloody mayhem. Or watch "Rubber" for a proper send up of the genre

People on Sunday

I was really surprised by this film! It came across almost like a Cassavetes film made in the silent era. Part documentary, part fiction, it really makes it seem like real life unfolding. The story is told through flirting, glances, jealous anger and through other, almost purely physical means.

World on a Wire

Amazing! I had only seen "Veronika Voss" which was really good but I finally understand the hype behind RW Fassbinder. This film does not feel like 3 1/2 hours at all and the story still holds up remarkably well. A precursor to "Blade Runner" and "The Matrix", this is definitely one of the great sci-fi films to watch. I can't believe I had not heard about it until now!

Pretty much all speculation and opinions, no facts. There are better docs (Nova) and even magazines (such as Discovery and Ideas & Discoveries) that are much better than this with real, valid information.

This one is pretty harrowing, even a bit difficult to get through at some points because it is so painfully real. WARNING: do NOT watch this on shrooms!
