I still can’t fathom how Kim Stanley lost the Oscar. Just the fact that she got nominated seems odd, so then to let Julie Andrews win it for Mary Poppins of all things seem even more odd!
I adore Sunrise, every shot is perfection. But the first I thought of was Atonement, that was a stunning shot on the beach (which was nice since I felt the middle of the dragged a little, so this shot was very welcome).
Sadly I have seen only one Israeli film, ‘Late Marriage’, and I don’t think I would consider it Criterion quality. :( Although I would love to see more from Israel, so anything Criterion wants to release is welcome!
I hate this! Because, ‘Beauty and the Beast’ is the only animated to have been nommed for best pic. With this rule change ‘Up’ will probably get nommed. It isn’t fair that due to a rule change ‘Up’ will be able to slide in and steal what ‘Beauty’ had to work so hard to get! It just ain’t fair!
‘Shakespeare in Love’, tsk tsk tsk. This has to be the worst best picture winner ever. I still can’t forgive the academy for awarding Gwyenth over Cate Blanchett in ‘Elizabeth’.
Also, how the hell did ‘The Color Purple’ not win any of it’s 11 noms, especially best actress! Geraldine Page only won because she had been nommed so many times without a win, I always feel like Geraldine Page isn’t really giving 100%, so Whoopi should have won.
It makes me sad to think that I am probably the only person in the world that actually likes ‘The Greatest Show on Earth’, ‘Ordianry People’ & ‘Crash’. Also, I think they deserved their Oscars. Whenever ‘Crash’ is shown in a classroom (and it is, often) the people who haven’t seen always react with great emotion, a bad movie wouldn’t cause such a great swell of emotion in such a large number of people. But as far as ‘The Greatest Show on Earth’ is concerned…I just like the circus ;)
Oh, also I really think Rinko Kikuchi should have won best suppoting actress for ‘Babel’ in stead of Jennifer Hudson in ‘DreamGirls’. That was a train wreck every saw coming but no one could stop.
I really to need to see more neo-realism films, although I seem to prefer more fantastical productions from the era. I do, however, really want to see ‘Bellisima’, is it as good as I hope? How’s Anna Magnani in it?
Also, I want to see ‘Shoeshine’ so I was reading about it on IMDb and it says that it has full frontal male nudity and I was like “What?! You kiddin’, right girl.” That just seems odd to me.
I forone love silent films. I can overlook the poor condition if the film is good enough, and Sunrise is absolutely good enough. I understand why people prefer The Passion of Joan of Arc, but for me Joan is more about Ms. Falconetti’s performance (which is jaw-droppingly amazing, something you’d never see today). Whereas Sunrise is a better film overall: story, cinematography, acting, sets, etc. It all just works together flawlessly.
I live in Des Moines and I think it kicks ass. A movie set in Des Moines could be awesome because Des Moines is a beautiful and very clean city with a diverse population. That being said, I think if Des Moines were a character it would probably be a fat white girl that loves a good giggle and an even better corn dog.
I keep hearing all this stuff about Tarkovsky but I can’t seem to find even one of his films that sounds interesting. I love female-driven dramas; preferably those with twist-turn plots and beautiful cinematography (for examples check my profile). The only genres I tend to steer clear of are action, sci-fi, and sports; and I hate documentaries. Can anyone suggest a Tarkovsky film that I’d like?
to User de Faux-Fuyants: I do like films from those genres, its just that I wouldn’t pay criterion prices for them, generally speaking.
And also, I’m glad to hear that about Solaris, I have wondered about it a lot…I just hope it is nothing like 2001 because that about made me tear my hair out (it’s beautiful and all, but I really couldn’t stand everything else, I also hated the book).
But tell me more about The Mirror.
Huh, maybe Tarkovsky ain’t for me. It seems like his films don’t have much plot at all, I can deal with a very non-linear plot, like Last Year at Marienbad, or even a very thin plot, like Climates. But an absence of plot, no thanks.
Okay, so he’s a misogynist. That I can’t deal with. I can sacrifice some plot for cinematography, I will even delve into the genres I don’t care for. But I won’t watch something made by someone who doesn’t understand the fact that women are just as whole as men and cen be out on thier own in the world with no consequences. I’m sorry for wasting every one’s time, but I think I’ll pass on Tarkovsky and stick with Bergman, Almodovar, and Altman for the time being.
I suppose you all are right about not judging an artists work on their personality. I do find sexism very offensive but I think his work deserves to judged on its own. After taking your advice into consideration I think I’m going to add Solaris to my ‘to see’ list, and then I’ll go from there. Thanks!
I think Audrey Hepburn’s Givenchy dress is amazing in Breakfast at Tiffany’s, also Yohji Yamamoto did some awesome designs in the Japanese film Dolls. Pierre Balmain did costumes for 1961s The Roman Spring of Mrs. Stone and 1962s Tender is the Night. Also, Christian Dior did some nuce understated costumes in Vittorio di Sica’s Stazione Termini. That all I got off the top of my head though!
I don’t get the hype around ‘The Rules of the Game’, and I while I thought ‘Last Year at Marienbad’was beautifully shot, I didn’t think it was so great either.
I agree that Happiness gave me a bit of a stomach-ache because of the pedophillia themes, but I love American Beauty, truth be told I was only 9 when it came out, but I loved it.
I’m 19 and working on my B.A. and I have no idea what to study in grad. school! My B.A. will be in Social Science so that leaves it wide open, but I can’t decide what I want to do! Aaagh!
Richard Yate’s The Easter Parade, after Revolutionary Road I thought someone might pick this up. It’s really a stunning novel, but I want to adapt it, no one else. I could make it so good!
