2:35.1 is definetly my favorite. The New World and George Washington are beautiful in that aspect ratio, but to be honest I didnt start to take notice of aspect ratios until about a year ago. I really prefer films shot in wide ratios.
WILKY61 how did you almost walk out of Hot Fuzz, that film is fantastic and it gets funnier everytime I see it. I was about to walk out of The Hitcher, I would never see a film like that normally but my friends convinced me to, what a waste of money.
oh man Dreamcatcher was horrible! I was young when I saw it and it really offended me how bad it was but I couldnt walk out cause it was for a birthday part. and MR E 2 ME you cant blame a curse on adaptations of Stephen King books for this being bad…look at all the fantastic adaptations: Stand By Me, The Mist, The Shinning, Shawshank Redemption, Misery, 1408(pretty good not great), The Green Mile
I loved the film American Psycho but I have to disagree, the book is far better. I found it so funny and disturbing at the same time. I often laughed out loud because of the novel.
MR E 2 ME – actually ya I have to agree with you, Ive just visited good ol Stephen King’s IMDB,, who knew how many terrible terrible adaptations of his stories there have been! wow.
@RGG, Miles Davis’ soundtrack to Elevator to the Gallows overshadowed that film so much (a film I dont think is even very good). Its a trully amazing piece of music, definetly my favorite album by Davis.
My favorites: Cliff Martinez, John Murphy and I’d love to see Jonny Greenwood compose more scores because he has such an amazing talent.
I am a high school student and also trying to work on becoming a director. I love every aspect of film, from writing, directing, editing and filming. It was probably the works of Terence Malick that turned me into a full out cinephile as it was my search for Days of Heaven that led me to find Criterion and that led me to a wider variety of films. My criterion collection so far is small, Days of Heaven, This Sporting Life, George Washington and Solo Con Tu Pareja but now ive figured out that buying from the website is SO much cheaper. I seem to waste all my money on DVDs, usually never seeing them before hand. I think that my collection is pretty big, its over 70 DVDs, now but I am sure tons of people here completely destroy that in number. Does anyone have any suggestions for must haves in terms of Criterion DVDs? By the way I am so glad there is a great site like this.
Salvo Giuffrida, Fat Girl is available to watch on this web site under Library, its among some other films, they added some more I think yesterday. I have to admit that the ending for the film really shocked me, I felt pretty sick after it. I really enjoyed the film though. I am very interested in seeing some of the directors other films…could someone recomend me her best?
Emmanuel Lubezki – Fantastic work in Y tu mama tambien and The New World
Tim Orr – Most of his films have shown his great talent, I cant wait to see what else he works on
OK so I want to ask for several Criterion DVDs for Christmas as I am farely new to Criterion. Ill list some movies I already own from Criterion and if I could get some suggestions for things I should ask for that would be great:
Days of Heaven
Solo Con Tu Pareja
This Sporting Life
George Washington
DVDs coming in the mail currently:
400 Blows
Band of Outsiders
Ivan’s Childhood
I Vitteloni
I would really like to go deeper into French New Wave but any suggestions would be appreciated.
I agree with Adam Suraf about the Del Toro’s great commentary on Hellboy 2. Actually anything with Del Toro talking is amazing. I love commentaries and if a film that I love doesnt have commentary that really hurts the chances of me buying it. David Gordon Green’s commentaries are always very interesting and wierdly funny.
to Jonathan Poritsky, I also love the Freaks and Geeks commentary, along with the commentary for Undeclared. Some of it is funnier than the actual show. If anyone wants to hear an extremely strange commentary, that this entirely counts but check out the commentary for the Ricky Gervais’ stand up comedy DVD Politics. The commentary for it is so strange and way funnier than the actual stand up material.
Bookwibble I dont understand how you find it distracting? I mean if you listening to commentary then whats distracting about that…your not suppose to be listening to the audio from the film.
I just ordered 4 dvds, coming up to a total of 95 and I just did the 10 dollar shipping, I live in Ontario. Today I wasnt home but I had a note from Canada Post telling me to pick up the package tommorow and that I owe them 45 dollars! If I had done the 35 dollar express shipping it only costs 13…so whats the deal? anyone had this problem?
I am a university student at Carleton in Ottawa, Canada. My main passion in life is film and has been since I can remember, it is because of that I have decided to put my future into my own hands and make a film.
The film, The Dead Days of Summer, is a coming-of-age genre film, focussing on a group of teenagers over the course of a summer. The twist is that the film takes place in a fenced-in suburb, the undead roam the earth and those remaining live in these protected communities.
I am in the middle of a crowd-funding campaign to raise 2,000 dollars to fully finance the film, which will shoot in July. We are twenty days into the campaign and we have raised 635 so far.
