Movies you hated that everyone else loves over 3 years ago

Robert Atlman’s The Player . I was so excited about it, and an hour and 15 minutes into I felt I’d had enough. I feel bad about and wrong about, because I love Altman, but The Player just didn’t do it for me.

I also severly dislike Aronofsky’s The Fountain . Although, I’m not really sure anybody really loves that movie.

Herzog, Welles, and Bergman on Godard over 3 years ago

I agree with Lee/Welles. Godard has had a major influence on film, but I really don’t care for his films and especially him.

“Godard is a fucking bore.” Oh, Bergman. We’re not worthy.

Directors that consistently make terrible films over 3 years ago

I agree w/ Lee. I believe The Departed holds up with Raging Bull and Taxi Driver. The 80’s were the only real bad time for him, and even that’s debatable.

Joel Schumacher is a bastard. He’s always made terrible movies, and always will.

Tarkovsky over 3 years ago

I’m extremely excited to see more Tarkovsky. I’ve only seen Solaris, which was a bit disappointing (not to say that it’s want good, just didn’t like it) and Andrei Rublev, which I love.

Any suggestions for what should come next?

Which Movies Have You Walked Out On? over 3 years ago

During class I walked out of Diva.

I’m not sure if this classifies as a walk-out, but I ejected Werckmeister Harmonies. I left it about an hour into it. It was so horrendous I just left my house, I didn’t even feel like being in the same room afterwards…

Punch-Drunk Love!

Some great Woody Allen ones: Annie Hall, Manhattan, Bananas, John Hughes’ Pretty in Pink, and some John Cusack classics: Grosse Point Blank, Better Off Dead, and my favorite — Say Anything.

Tony Scott over 3 years ago

i like Tony Scott. Not everything, of course — but you look can look at some footage and not know if it belongs to Ridley Scott. Tony’s film reek of his cut-up, over-exposed style, which sometimes works magnificently and other times gets boring and annoying.

And, Days of Thunder — ouch — I can’t help you with that one, buddy.

Best Actor and Supporting Actor Nominations for 2009 over 3 years ago

Although I think Mickey Rourke should get a nomination, I’m not sure if he deserves a win. The Wrestler was great, on par with Requiem (or better), and Rourke was great, but compared to what I’ve been hearing about Penn, I don’t think Rourke will do it.

Does anybody feel like Brad Pitt might get a nomination for Best Actor for Benjamin Button? I know the Academy like to be assholes and ignore David Fincher, but maybe 2009 will bring a change.

Anybody else hate the Dark Knight? over 3 years ago

I absolutely loved The Dark Knight.

I don’t understand disliking a film because of it’s place on a subjective “greatest” list. I’d completely agree: TDK is not the greatest film of all time. It’s not even one of the greatest films of all time.

I believe TDK actually goes beyond supherhero films. Yes, Christian Bale dresses up in a ridiculous outfit and talks in a throaty, hoarse tone. Yes, he flies around and stops bad guys. This is not all the film has to offer. Characters actually have depth beyond being trapped in a dangerous situation. Batman is as much a hero as Travis Bickle; they both want to clean the scum off the streets.

Opinions of Van Sant? over 3 years ago

I think (I haven’t seen Milk yet, though) My Own Private Idaho is Van Sant’s best. It’s also my favorite.

When Van Sant likes to get artsy (Last Days, Paranoid Park, godawful Gerry) I’ll just watch for his direction and the cinematography (Savides and Doyle rule!).

Bruce’s principles are the same from Batman Begins.

I think Ledger deserves an Oscar. I used to think he was an extremely average actor, truthfully. Just because he looks like he wore too much mascara and cried shouldn’t prevent him from winning. His performance wasn’t the evil antagonist nor was it a normal nausea-inducing lunatic. (Don’t get me wrong, blowing up hospitals and shoving pencils in people’s eyes is lunatic, too.) Ledger’s performance was amazing and he may have stolen the show in the audience’s eyes, but he still added to the film in a supporting way. Think of Michael Clayton. Tom Wilkinson tore the screen up and stole the film from Clooney. Although I’m still debating it, I think Wilkinson deserved to win more than Bardem.

Movies That Should Be In the Criterion Collection over 3 years ago

Belmondo makes a good point. Boogie Nights doesn’t need a Criterion release. Although I’d go apeshit if it got onto the collection, it’s 2 disc special edition already has enough.

I’m not sure if anybody said this already, which would be shocking, but:

Z by Costa-Gavras
Z by Costa-Gavras

The Last Picture Show > Kids in teenage sexuality.

I’ve only seen 2 films of Bogdanovich (the other one Paper Moon) but I love them both dearly.

On a side note: Ryan O’Neal is a fucking creep.

Hüsker Dü rules! Can it be settled that Zen Arcade is the best album of 2008 — even though it was released 20+ earlier? Can we, please?

I’m appalled that no one has mention In Rainbows!

Shame, fellow auteurs. Shame, indeed.

Do You Like Wes Anderson? over 3 years ago

I like him. He’s done one thing that I think is very difficult for new filmmakers: creating their own style. (Of course he’s obviously influenced by other directors — who isn’t?) Whether people like his style or not is completely up to them, but even people who dislike him have to give him that much.

I only really like Rushmore, Bottle Rocket, and The Life Aquatic. I thought Darjeeling was horrible (not even worth me italicizing the title!) and Royal Tenenbaums was pretty cool, but not as great as everybody claims it is.

He’s influenced a lot of even younger filmmakers who make these really annoying Wes Anderson-lookalike movies, and I think that’s why he rubs some people the wrong way.

Jack Kerouac / Walter Salles over 3 years ago

I remember hearing something about Brad Pitt once being involved with the possibility of playing Dean. That would have been great.

Walter Salles did Motorcycle Diaries, so he knows his road film. But I don’t know… I’m pretty scared.

I don’t think I can trust Coppola producing this, either. I love Godfather II and The Conversation as much as the next person, but he’s gone down… wwwwwway down in recent years.

Jack Kerouac / Walter Salles over 3 years ago

Bujalski? Really?

Jarmusch would be interesting. He can make a road-movie, there’s no doubt about that. But I don’t he’s wild, or “mad” enough to somehow translate the prose of Kerouac to the screen. Salles might not be fit for that, either.

I’d say Gilliam, but, um… No.
