I’ve never walked out of a film before but more than once have I turned off films when I just couldn’t stand it, and please don’t hate me for some of these, 2001: A Space Odyssey, anything by Michael Bay, Iron Man, Salo, Andre Rublev, Dances with Wolves, Hostel, Not one less, Branded to Kill, Look Back in Anger, and Pierrot Le Fou.
I think that’s it, Also the last two I fell asleep during I just couldn’t stand them.
Obvioulsy I’m going to get flamed for 2001 and maybe a few others but oh well I just thought they were bad to terrible films.
Sorry.
I agree with the whole Crash and Juno flaming, not so much Fight Club but then again I’m a fan of the novel to and just about everything
Chuck’s done. I actually through a shoe at my television when Juno got Best original Screenplay, just like when they looked back at all the other best picture winners and I went after Dances with wolves, I hate everything Costner has done except for Silverado.
Now onto the films which I’m going to draw flack about, everything Kubrick, I just never connected, Strangelove is decent, 2001 is a very pretty turd, Full Metal Jacket is nothing to get excited about, Clockwork was boring and uninteresting and terribly acted which makes me sad because I like McDowell, Spartacus is okay and I am sorry but I missed The Shining.
Also I think Tarantino is overrated and I don’t think Pulp Fiction is as Amazing as everyone else thinks it is, it’s good just not great.
Star Wars I was raised on it I love it, and Planet of the Apes never could compare with it in my mind, the sheer scope and majesty of an brilliant epic trilogy that fully grasps our own mythic history. It’s just brilliant.
Apes was just silly in my opinion and I never cared for it, it is okay but it just never caught me like Star Wars did.
Okay one person named Peckinpah which I completely disagree with but understand how some people would judge him thus especially with the last couple their like Convoy and The Killer Elite, or The Deadly Companions. But I still love the guy.
My choice Kubrick.
I’ve said this multiple times on this sight I do not like him I do not find his films insightful or marvelous. Usually I’m just bored by his films. That and 2001 was awful, pretty but awful.
Second Tarantino, I like the films but to call him the best director of this age is so dumb he is just really good and piecing together other peoples work and making something that film people will enjoy because it makes them feel smarter knowing all the references.
I couldn’t finish it as soon as it got to the circle of shit I pieced out. Which really just comments to the power of Pasolini’s filmmaking but I will never try to watch it again it’s just not my type of film and I don’t think I’ll ever get it it’s too violent and sadistic.
This may sound weird but my favorite part of his was as Stansfield in Leon; The Professional his quirks really set his character apart from other villains especially his love of music.
Benjamin Button 6/10 it’s okay but it’s getting way overblown. Pitt’s performance is okay better than what else I have seen for this year but not oscar worthy. Which just made me think how if The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford had been held back till this year it would sweep every category at the Oscars and Brad Pitt would get an Oscar for this and not Button.
Jason your comment about people who don’t dig Kubrick should stop watching movies was unnecessary and since I was the first to say that I don’t like Kubrick I feel a little insulted but nothing can change my mind about him or his subpar films. While I have way agree with the opinion of Hitchcock I don’t like all his films but some are great. Now some people have named Scorsese and while I’d like to respect their opinion part of me just wants to smack them because I really do love his films even if occasionally he tends to go off the handle their at the end which I usually accept gracefully as part of his general thematic. One of my friends keeps trying to get me into David Lynch and I just can’t do it, I might put him up for overrated, he really seems a emperor’s new clothes type and Kubrick really is.
P.S. I’m just now acknowledging that my hate of Kubrick is irrational I hate him with a passion consuming reason and while I always try to explain why I dislike him using rational means including pointing out the several weaknesses inherent in his poor film making on the whole I still wish I could reanimate his corpse and then kill him again for his continuous output of poor films throughout his miserable wretched career, his worst offenses still being A Clockwork Orange and 2001: A Space Odyssey. Look at my reviews for explanations.
1. The Wild Bunch
2. The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford
3. The Good the Bad and the Ugly
4. Once Upon a Time in the West
5. The Proposition/ Bring Me the Head of Alfredo Garcia
I love them all So Much
Also I have no idea where to put No Country for Old Men on this list but it’s somewhere in their as is Treasure of the Sierra Madre. God I love Westerns.
Jamon you should be able to see my list of favorite director’s under my profile. Also what am I “shitting” about like what are you referencing the dislike of Kubrick, the not quite getting of Lynch, the feeling that not all of Hitchcock’s film are gold (though vertigo is my favorite), or was it the slightly fanboy attitude towards Scorsese, who along with Peckinpah and Kurosawa make up my three favorite directors with Chaplin a hair behind in fourth (The Gold Rush is my childhood). I welcome you to critique any of them because I know what I like about them and why I see them being as great as they are. Even Peckinpah possibly the weakest link in that list to judge my taste on.
The emperors new clothes reference is the old story of the tailors who convince their King that they have made the finest outfit ever scene and only an idiot couldn’t see it. The problem is they hadn’t made anything, but nobody wanted to look like a fool so they all went along with it. I’m surprised you didn’t here this when you were a kid. Also I’ll admit my reanimation comment was way out of hand but it’s just when I start to think about him and the time I’ve wasted trying to like him all the time I’ve wasted on his films it make me feel so unproductive and wasteful that I just get stupid and angry. But most of the time I am a rational human being, trust me.
Thanks for the condescending remarks Jason I appreciate it, because I kind of miss it when my friends tell me to Go Fuck Yourself, (Surprisingly I’m told that a lot). Not aiming any insults at you just at Kubrick, enjoy him. I’ll live life my own way and make films my own way.
I accept what little you apologize for and am grateful for it. It’s okay that we get fiery passionate about our opinions even if at times it blocks us from rational argument. It really makes me happy that other people can be passionate about film like I am even if I disagree with them. Thanks for the opinion.
Im 20 and a film major at the university of Kansas Sophomore year, second kid at KU. I’ve made a couple of films in High school my first one was submitted, without my knowledge to the Kansas City Film Festival and I have still yet to see it myself. I heard it was well received don’t know wasn’t there.
I like the dark knight but at the same time it was really just held together by Heath’s excellent performance so I can understand it not getting other nominations and I’m fine with it not getting them. So what I’m trying to say yeah it was good but not that good. On the other hand Benjamin Button was pretty weak and some how managed to get 13 nominations and it’s no where near as good as Dark Knight. But on the whole I just thought this year was really weak.
With that in mind I’d like to nominate Cross of Iron for Criterion I just got it the other day on DVD but several of the scenes look like the have been over exposed of scratchy but a criterion version of it would be quite stupendous.
I still thought the winners the last two years were great I still have long discussions with people about The Departed and No Country For Old Men, they were great films. Though I will concede The Departed is not nearly as good as Goodfellas but it was still amazing. Plus we know part of the reason Marty finally got the Oscar for The Departed is because the Oscars had screwed him over multiple times (Costner winning over Scorsese was such a travesty that I seriously doubt that you can take the Oscars seriously.
I may like the film but the line in Ratatouille when Remy says, “I thought you were different, I guess I was wrong.” That line seems to be so over used that here I just started laughing at how dumb it was.
To me the worst oscar snubs were Rocky, over Taxi Driver, Ordinary People, over Raging Bull, and Dances with Wolves over Goodfellas, none of those winners are really good movies and yet some how they triumphed over three of cinemas masterpiece ( yes I know this is all Scorsese but he is still my favorite director) also I would say Chicago over Gangs of New York. Also Scorsese in general was the victim of the oscars worst snub lasting thirty years, that’s how you know that you can’t trust the Oscars.
Once Upon a Time in the West and The Wild Bunch, No Country for Old Men, and The Propsoition. Those have to be my favorites they just always blow me away.
Wow I usually can only watching about four to five in a row but I do it about three times a week. So not to bad in my opinion especially since this is my average weekly routine.
I’d like to add Cross of Iron as one of the few truly antiwar films in the fact that it is continually shown that no one in the film wants to be fighting but do it only to live. But also the whole film is filled with an extreme amount of hate towards the concept and power structure of war.
Also I would say Overlord as being the other film to best characterize this, since as soon as combat even starts the main character gets killed showing as Christopher said your more likely to just be the guy who gets shot as soon as the doors open and that is what overlord really showcases.
