For Kurosawa, I would recommend Ran (Since you’ve seen Rashomon and Seven Samurai). For Fellini, start with 8 1/2, it’s a great movie. As for Truffaut, Shoot the Piano Player, or 400 Blows.
Hi, I’m Ryan. I’m 14. I live out in the suburbs of Chicago. I hope to study film in college, and either be a film critic or work in the somewhere in the film industry.

The world is far from going HD. Blu-Ray is still way too expensive, so I don’t expect to see Blu-Ray selling better than DVD any time soon. Honestly though, I’m happy with my regular DVDs. They look fine.
But back to Criterion releasing Blu-Ray, I think for them to switch from DVD to Blu-Ray all of a sudden would make them lose money. If DVD is selling better than Blu-Ray, and they switched to Blu-Ray…Well, that wouldn’t be a wise move financially.
I like this forum. The people seem really kind, helpful, and intelligent. I’ve never been to the IMDB forums (Although, unfortunately, I have seen their top movies list), so I couldn’t say if there was a difference, but I do like it here. I don’t know nearly as much as I’d like to about film, but this place seems like a great way to learn.
It’d be to hard to pick and choose bands, so I’ll just say what genres I’m interested in. Classic rock, metal, and indie rock (Among others, of course). My favorite albums are
- Highway 61 Revisited – Bob Dylan
- Excitable Boy – Warren Zevon
- Magical Mystery Tour – The Beatles
- Wish You Were Here – Pink Floyd
- What’s Going On – Marvin Gaye
I agree with 53, everyone is entitled to their opinion. If someone thinks that Fight Club is the greatest movie ever, great, good for them. There’s nothing wrong with thinking that. I think the best thing to do, instead of insulting them, is trying to help them and suggest more movies that they would enjoy.
I haven’t come across any that I don’t like so far, but it seems like a ton of people don’t like The Rock. Honestly, I thought it was a pretty good movie. I really enjoyed watching it the first time, and I’ve seen it many times since then. Just a fun movie.
I think I might be the only one that didn’t find “Freaks” disturbing. There was some weird stuff in it, but nothing that ever frightened me.
Another film that I found to be somewhat disturbing was “Eyes Wide Shut”. Some of the scenes (The orgy comes to mind) are very frightening, just because you’re constantly wondering what’s going to happen to Tom Cruise’s character.
I would like to be able to quote other people’s messages, and italics and bold would be nice too. I would also love to see more American films in the library. I was just looking today, and saw that The Hustler, The Maltese Falcon, The Sting, and The Caine Mutiny aren’t in there. They’re all great movies in my opinion, it would be nice to see them in there. But overall, I think that a lot of movies need to be added to the library. Good or bad, I’m sure there’s somebody here for all of them, and then you have to option to review more movies.
But I really do like the site, keep up the good work.
When I say that they’re too expensive, I mean per movie. When I go to Best Buy, most of the blu-ray or HD DVDs I see are 30+ dollars. That’s a lot of money for one movie, especially when I could get two DVDs for that price. Another thing is, a lot of older movies aren’t available on blu-ray. I’m sure that they will be eventually, but that’s going to take quite some time I’m sure.
I love Criterion. In my opinion, they release the best DVDs, but I would like to see a lot of other movies from them, but who doesn’t?
I’m able to get them at Barnes and Noble for about 28 dollars each. 10% off automatically, plus another 10% because I’m a member, and a 20% off coupon adds up to 40% off.

I’d rather see them stick with films. Although, I suppose if they dug up some really good TV shows, I wouldn’t mind.

The scene in 8 1/2, with all of the people drinking water. I love that scene. Also, the ending of Blade Runner.
