I do not think we should request Criterion to release titles which are available elsewhere or is already available on DVD.
The recent Eclipse release of Rossellini is a real gem. Films which I have not expected to watch in my lifetime is now available.
A retorspective of Satyajit Ray would be be good, but I hope that the titles will not be the same as those already released by Eureka or Artificial Eye in the UK. E-commerce has made titles available across regions and made the titles available simaltaneous across the globe. So as far as I am concerned, a title released in the UK would mean it is available by post in Malaysia where I live.
Of course the cost would differ country to country and for some, the availability of english subtitles.
I just Criterion will take into account when they are releasing any future titles.
But I am glad that Criterion will be relaseing two films of Oshima which although is already available, but the quality of the DVDs are much to be desired. Maybe an Eclipse release of an Oshima collection without any duplication of titles already released in the UK and Hong Kong.
That is what I hope will happen – that everyone does not duplicate each other unless the latter release is of a excellent quality.
