Goin’ Down The Road, although perhaps not a traditional road movie, is also one of my favorites and completely under appreciated outside of film circles. It captures the loneliness of the road and the displacement one feels when they are far from home. A Canadian classic and a great film. Good call lonewolf!
Sometimes I feel like I’m the only person in the world who HATED “Little Miss Sunshine”. I have yet to meet a person who shares that opinion. Help me out here!!
I think Casino gets overlooked sometimes because of the similarity in tone and casting to Goodfellas, which came only a few years before and, of course, is a masterpiece. I love Casino.
Henry and Karen entering the club through the back door in “Goodfellas”.
The beginning of “The Player”
Nicholson and the butler in the men’s room in “The Shining”
This is fun!
There is a doc out there called “Fabulous: The Story of Queer Cinema”, or something very close to that. That would be a great resource for anyone who wanted some insight into many interesting films. It includes an in depth look at the early ’90’s “New Queer Cinema” featuring Araki, Haynes, Jarman etc. Good doc.
“Glengarry Glen Ross” is like a dream team of a cast. You can’t go wrong there. “Hurly Burly”, although not anywhere as good as Glengarry, still gave us a great opportunity to see Sean Penn revisit an intriguing character which he played on stage. That is a difficult script, and they truncated it quite a bit, but there are some great moments in this film. “This So-Called Disaster” gives us an excellent look at the process of theatre from some truly gifted artists working through a script.. Penn, Nolte and Shepard are also pretty close to a dream team, and this fly on the wall type look at the mounting of a Shepard play is amazing viewing. Check it out.
Being a Ryan Gosling fan, I was disappointed. I thought his performance was slightly over the top and he was not grounded in that character. I didn’t believe him in this film. This made it impossible for me to enjoy this original and gutsy film…and I really wanted to like it.
I thought “La Haine” was a great film and, given the events of the past couple of years, very prescient. One that often gets overlooked is “Le Boucher” by Claude Chabrol, which is interesting in many ways, both cinematic and its take on post WWII French guilt. The eighties Cinema du Look group of filmmakers, Luc Besson et al., should probably be mentioned as well, the best film from that period, in my opinion, being J.J. Beineix’s “Diva”. I love this topic!
I really enjoyed this film when I saw it a few years back, yet I haven’t met too many people who have seen it. Is there any love out there for “Late Marriage”?
“I love the smell of napalm in the morning” That whole bombing sequence is choice. That one camera movement from eye level to looking up at Duvall’s character has stayed with me since the first viewing years ago. Everything about that sequence is perfect.
His performance in Diner is fantastic. He was cast perfectly in that film, and I think that was his truly great performance. Another example of perfect casting, his role in Sin City, allowed him to give an excellent performance. As Tarantino put it when that film was being shot “Mickey was born to play this part”. Awesome movie. I am really looking forward to The Wrestler!!!
I had a fantastic experience with this movie. I saw it on the first weekend, not knowing anything about it, in a late night packed house. It scared the shit out of me. Sure, there is a lot to pick apart and complain about, if you want, but why? It was an original idea and if you let yourself get involved in it, it is scary and fun. What is wrong with that?
