Xurxo G Penalta: Filmography

Battleship

Peter Berg takes Michael Bay's transformers approach to the uber-saturated-blockbuster but formulates it in a narratively coherent, layered and dynamic way. it's by far Taylor Kitsch's better film, no doubt. i would never guess i'd enjoy it as much as i did.

Battleship

BATTLESHIP is simply great fun. make no mistake it is the summer-blockbuster-macho-testosterone-military-propaganda-disaster-alien-invasion-patriotic film it promises to be but it's perfectly fine. it just does all those formulaic things all at once but really well, effectively, timely, balanced and with enough taste not to insult anyone, or almost.

Battleship

Battleship

best looking superhero movie in a long time. ghost rider never looked better, not even in his books, and no movie ever does that. neveldine/taylor fight against the mandatory standardized hollywood script. in the process they save some of nick cages well known talents and produce the thrilling hero movie you can laugh with. yet pointless exposition and gratuitous family drama disjoint the otherwise crank-like pace.

Drive

like skimming through a wonderfully glossy but ultimately hollow trendy magazine. an elegant esthetic exercise with a paper thin argument. although visually enjoyable, it leaves nothing to be discussed and is instantly forgettable. gosling is way over his head and by far the weakest thing on the film.

Drive is nothing but trash masquerading as arthouse cool. It falls flat on its face. Poorly written and pretentiously directed--its characters are clumsy, its plot is flimsy, it very quickly degenerates into excessive graphic violence, and its overall style is mind-numbing.

Back to the Future

saw it on bluray last night. what a great, entertaining, complex and original story. fox, lloyd and thompson are as perfect a casting as you can get.

Immortals

one of the worst films i've sen this year.

Joe Dante

since 80s are so celebrated today, i'd get behind, in a second, of a third installment of the gremlins franchise in the genius hands of Joe Dante, who's proven to know how to make the very best kids scary sci-fi material again and again, and also following the 3D trend, to truly understand the possibilities of 3D on his latest film THE HOLE, in which with classic mastery uses modest in-camera tricks to the most amazing emotional effects, aside from the truly compelling metaphor for children's fears that the movie presents. this man could have made SUPER 8 work!

Cast Member Still

the story is self aware of its "sequelness" and its obvious marketability yet uses that knowledge to be more fun and entertaining than carrying the strange occurrence "twilight zone" tone of the original through a sequel would have been. the rick baker puppets and effects are truly amazing, gizmo is perplexingly alive, evil gremlin designs are amazingly heterogeneous, complex and imaginative.

Cyrus

c.reilly and tomei give a naturally humorous feel to the story, jonah hill sweats balls just to stand near them, playing someone waaaay different from what he's shown so far and the whole film suffers for it. either miscast or the character needed some rewriting adapting it to hill's potential. the story was probably funny and tense enough on paper so there's plenty of material to be enjoyed on a first watch.

Project Nim

MUST WATCH. what starts as a awkward science project ends as an emotional and affecting statement for the humane treatment of animals. documenting the unforgivable mistreatment of a baby primate through decades of experiments, medical testing, changing environments and owners. an instructive film to accompany the entertaining yet loaded RISE OF THE PLANET OF THE APES. both important films of this year 2011

Moneyball

it's well done but unawareness or disinterest of the baseball game can make these 2 hrs tedious. it showcases the world's highest payed character actor trying to play leading man. it dont work. the best actor casted phillip seymour hoffman has about 10 lines of dialog. the whole thing is pretty forgettable.

Straw Dogs

embarrassingly bad. terribly miscast. sad remake.

Straw Dogs

good cast, few good jokes, tons & tons of cliches, terrible plot, no story whatsoever... pointless endeavour...

Crazy, Stupid, Love.

fun, educative and inspiring! must watch!!

Machete Maidens Unleashed!

Spielberg uses this new technology to reinvent his filmaking and achieve the most complex and capricious film ideas with ease. The joy felt by the filmaker at work is palpably present on this massively imaginative and compeling adventure. Tintin has the sense of wonder of the early spielberg, the playfullness of the original indy series and the timeless charm and elegance of the herge stories.wonderfull collaboration

Contagion

well executed, well researched, portrays detailed and wide ranging effects of a worldwide event. completely unemotional, as a clinical portrayal but to a uninteresting degree, common characteristic of this filmmaker's work. somehow just hiring compelling actors (like paltrow, winslet, damon) isn't enough to compel... an un-empathic film

Contagion

Attack the Block

it seems to follow films like kick-ass and hanna in succeeding at amplifying the immediate effect of common action movie violence by having younger people execute it. possible short term cure for audience desensitization. worrying.// entertaining but nothing we haven't seen before, most humor is powered through the use of foul language by teens and pre teens. economy of its filming make it better than future remakes

Never Let Me Go

well done. well acted. guessing story probably worked better as a book.

Bridesmaids

it's funny and entertaining. it has the common flaws of the genre, plot spread thin over the feature length, over the top moments distance it from reality, cheap potty humor, foreseeable "we all learned our lesson" happy ending and the likes. it is refreshing to see women as subjects of this type of film, but that doesn't make it more relevant, after all the set goals are to conquer the BFF title and to get married!!

Bridesmaids

The Green Hornet

the casted talents and virtuous director provide a seemingly opaque product. the humor works better than the action possibly because they never quite gel together, the action suffers more for it. the film is watchable but quickly forgettable. nothing as terrible as it was made to be by online commentators.

The Green Hornet

Win Win

good cast, hardly a story, the film doesn't work.

Win Win

Rise of the Planet of the Apes

Conan the Barbarian

original conan is a proper movie, simple yet memorable and which set the standard for iconic epic fantasy films. 2011s is another episodic tv script compilation turned to an uninspired movie. being better than the "post 300 high contarst/slowmo" successors, or less obnoxious, its simple revenge theme and redundant violent action turn insipid in about 30 minutes. it'd be more memorable as a 3 episode cable series.

Super 8

i wanted to like this, as everyone else my age. but it's only a weak TV short subject script turned to a nostalgia fueled aimless collage of revered commercial films. it'd be forgiving to say it misunderstands everything it references, when it basically uses reference justify it's lack of substance and to guarantee an "emotional appeal" for wider demographic. see it at home, if at all...

Super 8

A balanced smart yet entertaining sci-fi blockbuster doesn't come around that often. this is as great a prequel as one can be in the blockbuster range. its contents and messages are important and controversial. sustains interest through out, reaching a strong empathic and emotional fascination at several points. must watch!

Rise of the Planet of the Apes

The Thing

just re watched this. its close to perfect for what it is. carpenter carries suspense and tension through out masterfully, makes slow pace and a sparse plot work complementary. russel's part is an inspired fit and the secondary characters are flawlessly casted. extreme bio-physical effects have aged beautifully, surprisingly so, to the shame of contemporary CGI. THIS FILM NEEDS NO REMAKING CAUSE IT'S ATEMPORAL.

X-Men: First Class

slips right into the Singer x-men continuity, with more vitality and youth than the original films ever had>tv feel comes from episodic structure, like 3 short movies in one>similarly to the StarTrek reboot>you immediately what to see another one>seems like Fassbender could make any screen hero work at this point in his career>Bacon McAvoy make the whole thing work, no matter how forgetful the rest of the cast may be
