Hi Ryan, I’m 60+ now and started when films were only film, lucky you! I would not hesitate to recommend Fellini Satyricon, I think it one of his best. As for Seven Samurai, I thrilled you have seen it so young. You will watch it many times more. One of the finest examples of cinema with an excellent cast. As has already been mentioned, Japan is a cineaste’s paradise. You could get lost in that country alone.
Regarding Ozu: if you watch his films and are not interested, remember him for later in your life. There will come a time….
Lastly, I would recommend attending any festivals that you can. No matter how much seems available on DVD, etc., there is another world of ephemeral film that you might see once and disappears forever. I have memories of many films I wish I could see once more, but which disappeared unreleased. I suspect some of the negatives are also gone.
Well, I was all set to offer some help, but to my surprise it ain’t always so easy. I bought my Catcom Video combo (Ride…, Shooting, 2 cartoons, and ‘classic’ commercials) a few years ago from an online store that is gone. No complaints about the quality, although the menu/format is goofy, the films are there and good.
A quick check of Amazon shows separate versions and mine listed mostly for $$$$$. But there is one new seller listed there for $30 + shipping for the Catcom combo ‘new’ which isn’t bad if you want to try it.
Good luck and good choices.
Wally
HEY! LISTEN UP! Harry Smith is available on DVD at http://www.harrysmitharchives.com/index.html. I have Heaven & Earth Magic and Harry Smith Vol 1. Not inexpensive, HAEM $50 DVD, and the production is pretty basic, but if you love HS, I do, here it is.
ALSO: Belson, Fischinger, and others at http://www.centerforvisualmusic.org/
And don’t forget the readily available Norman McLaren compilation.
Rights (and also existence) are a big problem with a lot of this stuff. There are things I saw in the 1960s I never expect to see again.
ditto: hellman and oates are watchable over and over. i’ve seen blacktop since it was originally made and many times since. i’ll watch anything with either of the two involved. not everyones cup of tea, but certainly mine.
I seem to be in the minority here, although I agree with Ari about all over the map, but I believe Broadway Danny Rose is easily his best work in many ways.
I just watched this and what a disappointing piece of drivel. I can’t imagine what Burton was thinking.
There are some interesting ideas in the story approach the actual result is trash. The score is a joke. The only good thing – some of the sets, mostly early on, are interesting, but the ‘effects’ were childish and overdone.
I’ve seen many, many Alice films, but this was the worst (and that includes the porno version).
I noticed a lot of complaints regarding Mia W. I won’t debate them but I don’t think it is material to the overall quality of the film.

Nakadai is a consumate actor, not to belittle Katsu, but I don’t think he has Nakadai’s breadth.
